Hi all, Georgie is 21 months old and isnt eating. Hes always been picky but now hes just turning his nose up at everything...Henry's Wild Bites, (he previously went on strike against all the other flavors but has been eating Wild Bites for more than a year), Teklad blocks, vegetables, even fruit AND avacadoes! Hes fed strictly according to the food pyramid....always has been and never gets nuts or acorns.
Hes been stashing his blocks in his nest box. I'm giving him until midnight each day to eat his Henry's blocks before tossing them just to give him a chance to eat them but he doesn't. Today I gave him avacado thinking surely he would eat it but he turned up his nose and a few hours later I found it in the nest box.
It's been a week since hes eaten any blocks. It's been several weeks since he started rejecting vegies and fruits.I'm going to order a different flavor if Henrys but don't think it will make any difference because he's not eating fruits or vegetables either.
Hes quite calm.....not lethargic but calm. He does play with me when hes out of the cage daily.....loves to wrestle, climb, hop, jump, get loved on xcetera. He gets plenty of apple, birch, oak and maple sticks from my yard. I scrub the sticks clean before giving them to him.
Hes a big boy, his winter weight was almost 2.8lbs so he isnt starving....at least not yet.
Anyone have any ideas or reasons why hes on a hunger strike??

Usually when they stop eating it’s the first indication that they may be sick. Even something like a UTI can cause them to not eat. Any chance you have a vet who could examine him?

How are his teeth?

He shreds branches just fine....wouldnt that be an indicator that they arent too long?

You should get a helper to hold him and use a popsicle stick or pencil to open his mouth and examine it…..just to be on the safe side.

Some have found that a couple of drops of the below source of organic food grade Chia oil added to the block, increases its appeal to squirrels that have stopped eating it.
Worth a try.

'Food grade' organic chia oil, one of two sources of heart healthy seed oils higher in Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids, provides significant anti-inflammatory and immune health support.

Chia
Warning!! Never substitute food grade edible oils with carrier oil sources; carrier oils aren't a food source fit for human or animal consumption.

This is as good as I could get without a helper. What do you think?

Those teeth look pretty good to me. Very slightly uneven top teeth but I would not touch those teeth at this point.

Blanch (short term boiling 90 sec.) baby organic frozen packaged greens. Blanching lends significant support towards neutralizing the pH of greens that is needful to support a slightly acidic mean urine pH of the diet that is optimal for the digestion and availability of nutrients in greens to the body of tree squirrels cared for in captivity.

In addition, soiled based organisms (prebiotics with probiotics) lend significant support towards digesting greens which otherwise are poorly digested by squirrels. In the wild tree squirrels have access to soil based organisms. Wild soils contain parasites and worms that damage the body; so the supplementation of a source of (SBO) is needful.

"Pet Flora" tested long term in the diet of a gray squirrel. https://vitalityscience.com/product/cat-probiotics/

These veggie sources are available at Whole Foods, Sprouts, and other a number of markets. Check with local stores for availability. For all stalked and root veggies, and peas, boil as noted on label. Limit peas as they are higher in phosphorus. Makes sure to compensate for sources higher in phosphorus to support a healthy Calcium to phosphorus whole diet ratio that is vital for maintaining metabolic and bone health in tree squirrels.
