She had something similar a couple years ago. It affected this same ear, but also her nose and two front feet . This time it’s just the right ear. The left is beginning to show a small lesion. I’ve tried Amox/clav, Baytril, and now just topicals. It will improve some but never completely. I can do a C&S, but was wondering if this could be viral?

Yucky. Was it the same time of year when it occurred before?

Perhaps sarcoptic mange which causes itchiness, loss of fur and crustiness. A gentle scraping to view under the microscope should tell.
As you know, Ivermectin I assume would be the source to use to treat it if that were the cause.

I hope its not the pox. For that look for oozing and spreading. (For pox gold bond powder (IR recommends), and acyclovir I believe.

Giving AB for secondary infection short term; be sure to concurrent include probiotics, so that the good gut bacteria doesn't get wiped out
and mess up digestion and calcium availability from the diet.

Poor baby 😞
Any chance Revolution could help 🤷
Silver cream.
Just trying to think of anything and everything.

My dog suffers from contact dermatitis. His belly breaks out in a solid red rash then a secondary infection erupts. I think it begins as fungal, but I’m not sure. I’ve had two different vets treat him for it. One used cephalexin and the other used Cefpodoxime Proxetil. Both drugs cleared it up. Once I had a different vet prescribe Amoxicillin because you can get it for free from the pharmacy……and it didn’t touch it.

She sleeps with her sister every night and she doesn’t have it ; but, she does groom it so trying to separate them a few nights. Didn’t think of Revolution, and maybe will try the medicine IR recommended. Her ears already look wonky because she had double hematomas as a baby . Haven’t tried cephalexin Mel, will give that a go. And with probiotics , as DF recommends:)

Can you get it tested? Fungal infections are on the rise and can be really persistent and resistant to treatment.

Hi Snicker Bar. Sorry about Doodles! Your plan sounds good! May I also suggest a skin scraping for a KOH preparation to check directly for fungal elements under a microscope. Sometimes adding a stain may help define the presence of fungus but KOH to dissolve any skin cells and other extraneous material in your sample is often all that is needed to enhance visualization of fungal elements if they are present.
Best regards and say hello to Doodles, V, and the rest of the gang from me.

Thank you for checking, this is her ear today. I tried to treat conservatively for awhile with topicals , including a combination of an anti fungal, antibiotic and anti inflammatory. But, it seemed these actually made the thing worse?
So went back to Baytril and it does seem to be much better!

I should have cultured before all the meds, just thought the combination creams would knock it out and be safer on her gut :(

Cc, you just reminded me about a package I’ve promised to send (?? How many times now ??!) :(

I have good intentions, and then someone hollers my name, or whatever, and the good intention sits right where it was :(

Maybe I can get it to you before the next need arises :( !
