Hi everyone,
I am new to the group and joined after a momma squirrel was hit by a car and her babies started coming down to find human help!
The first one came last Friday. He was a little male, seemingly around 6-7 weeks old. I took him immediately to a local rehab/wild animal sanctuary in West Palm Beach. It is a private tour zoo basically, with big cats and snakes, that also has a rehab license.
I made a donation and turned him over and as I was filling out the paperwork, the girl who took him was talking about how the baby squirrels are so loud because they always scream when they are hungry. She also said they would release him in around two weeks if he was doing well. I didn't have the best feeling leaving him after talking with her.
The next day, Saturday, a small female squirrel came out of the tree. She stayed overnight with the guy that found her. The sanctuary was closed Sunday. On Monday I called to see if they would return the first squirrel so they could be together (after reading I realized that the plan they described was not an ideal rehab setting for a squirrel...maybe they are better with other animals). They explained that regulations prohibit them from returning animals once they are taken in, which makes sense. They said they could release him to another licensed rehabber. She said again that he would be released at the end of next week if he continues to do well. His sister is not even eating solid food yet, so I am not sure that releasing as a tiny baby is the best option for him. She said they just take them to a preserve and let them free.
Is there a more squirrel experienced rehab person that would be willing and be able to pick him up in West Palm? After reading on this forum, I do not have a lot of confidence in this organization's squirrel experience. :( I was hoping to find a licensed situation that they could release him to that would be better for him.
Thank you for reading!
