I have two pinky squirrels approximately ten days old. There were three but I lost one Sunday due to aspiration. Two girls still alive one very small so I started both of them on heavy whipping cream last night, mixed with generic form of esbilac. Today both squirrels have diarrhea with blood in their stools
Very weak and listless even though I have been hydrating all day with Pedialyte/distilled water mix. I am heartbroken! What can I do?!!!

First you have to get regular powdered Esbilac puppy formula. Generic is NOT THE SAME. Tractor Supply stores, PetCo and Pet Supermarket usually sell Esbilac. DO NOT GET LIQUID ESBILAC.

If you can’t immediately find powdered Esbilac then make up some goats milk formula. Most grocery stores sell Meyenburg goats milk either fresh in the refrigerated section or powdered and liquid concentrate in the aisle with canned milks. Fresh is best so if you can find it use it. The other two have to be reconstituted with water prior to making into formula. The recipe for the homemade goats milk is 3 parts goats milk, 1 part full fat vanilla yogurt and 1 part heavy whipping cream. This formula is very easy to digest but is only a short term fix. You will need to be able to transition them in a week or so to the correct powdered Esbilac or order Fox Valley 20/50 from an online source. Henry’s Pets online sells the Fox Valley as well as syringes and nipples for feeding. Nipples and the correct syringes will make feeding them much easier.

If they have aspiration pneumonia they have to be treated with an antibiotic. See what you have in the medicine cabinet or friends and family’s medicine cabinets. Post what you find and the strength of the meds.

In the meantime hold the babies up to your ear like a phone and listen to their breathing from the chest. Do you hear a click with each breath?

They may be listless because they need the proper nutrition. Stop with pedialyte if you’ve been using it for about 24 hours and use plain water with a small tad of sugar for sweetness. They will need the water given drop by drop if necessary. Stop the distilled water and either use tap water or bottled water, you dont need distilled.

What’s most important here is to determine if they are clicking from their chests when they breath and to get the goats milk or Esbilac to provide proper nutrition.

First, STOP the distilled water. It is dangerous, as it actually draws minerals out of the body.
Heavy whipping cream is sometimes too rich for pinky stomachs; you may want to use just the Esbilac puppy milk instead. You must use the powdered form, not the liquid in the can.

Which "generic Esbilac" are you using....how often are you feeding? Sorry for all the questions but we want to help you save your little ones.
