I live in an apartment on third floor, facing a small patch of forest. There are 2-3 squirrels visiting my balcony all through out the day, I feed them and birds sunflower seeds. One squirrel is also using a basket for sleeping out there sometimes. This morning when I opened my balcony, there was a squirrel on the balcony ledge, and it got scared and fell from the balcony 😢 about ten meters down onto rock. I looked down and it was a bit shocked first but then started moving again… it was holding one of the hind legs up to the body, and running on three legs… it now climbed up to my balcony again and ate some sunflower seeds and is now resting in its little basket… it was still holding the hind leg up to the body, not using it. I spoke to local wild animal ambulance service and they said to keep watch on it. So will keep a watch over it to see if it looks like it is in pain or getting worse here. But What do you think? Do you think it might have broken a leg, or could it be a sprain? Is it possible for it to heal itself if provided with food and water?

Squirrels are amazing healers, but at times need assistance. It could be just a sprain or it could be broken. Depending on the severity of the break it is possible for it to heal on its own, but there’s always a possibility that it won’t have full range of motion. Watching it and providing food and water so it can rest is a good first start.
Can you provide something a little more nutritious than sunflower seeds and nuts? Often times wild squirrels will eat chunks of avocado (no skin or pit), chunks of raw coconut, chunks of fresh corn on the cob, sweet potato, sugar snap peas, blueberries, strawberries including the green tops, cherries (no pit). Wild squirrels balance their diet when given nuts by eating bark, dirt, roots etc. He will be limited if he stays put and recuperates so additional healthy foods would be good.
If you can locate some infant ibuprofen someone on her can help you dose it if you can post a picture of the size of the squirrel for weight estimate. The ibuprofen will help with the pain. White tears in a squirrels eyes is an indication of pain.
