It might just be due to the temperatures. Or you could have someone poisoning them?

It's the end of mating season and the beginning of baby season for tree squirrels. Many females will be hiding in their nests with their brand new pinky babies. For the first two weeks of their lives, squirrel moms barely leave the babies at all.

The males, on the other hand, have been chasing the females incessantly and beating the living crap out of each other.

Both of these things can cause you to not see your squirrel friends.
