Hi,
I am posting again just in case my other post did not submit, which I don't think it did :(

My one-year-old Zoomie's face is swelling. We had to trim her bottom teeth about two weeks ago which was a disaster. Managed to trim them but later that night I was looking, and it doesn't look like I took anything off and may have even left a sharp edge on the one. She won't chew on anything, I have tried every type of tree, branch stone. She shows no interest in them. Before the trimming i noticed her eating weirdly and when I was trying to check her teeth out, I thought I seen a mark or hole in the roof of her mouth. Her behavior was off also. Wasn't eating well sleeping a lot, just wasn't her usual self. After the "trimming" and antibiotics (only had a max of 3 doses, once she caught onto the smell, she wanted nothing to do with it or anything I tried to stick it in) she did start looking better.
A few days ago, I noticed her going back down hill, and today being her worst. I checked on her this morning before work and noticed her eye is puffy (she is blind in one eye, been since she was a pinky). I called home to check on her and my fiancé said she has been sleeping all day but woke her and she did eat a few small pieces of avocado which he injected with Children's Motrin.. Figured if she at least got a little bit it would help with her pain and swelling. He mentioned she was shivering, and her lip and nose is now swelled.
He said he happened to get a good look at her top teeth while she was struggling trying to get the avocado down being it is sticky and said he seen her two top teeth are growing backwards into the roof of her mouth. At first, we didn't think she had top teeth but now we know why they were so hard to see.
SHE IS GOING DOWN HILL FAST and I don't know what else to do... Is there a squirrel friendly vet I can take her to? I tried looking online but i am afraid to just go because I don't want them to take her from me! I am in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area. I will do whatever it is to save her, just tell me!
I do have doxy 100mg is that something I should think about giving her in case she has an infection where her tooth was catching her lip or the roof of her mouth? She is just over a pound. If so, how much would she need?
She has been drinking here and there for me, I just have to help her by making the bottle drip into her mouth, so she doesn't have to use her tongue. Before all this happened, she was pretty much healthy except her one eye. She was an awesome eater. Ate her blocks every morning and followed the pyramid for lunch and dinners. She would get an unshelled nut or a couple of pumpkin seeds after dinner. (I'm assuming because of these top teeth is why she couldn't crack nuts?)
I know this is a lot but I am currently working and wanted to get as much info to you as I could.. Any help is so much appreciated!

OK I'm just replying to bump your thread.
It may be her upper incisors are growing backwards ...hard to say.
There are people in PA here that should have information for you.
Stay calm and I know this awesome group of squirrel lovers will help 👍

Charlie Chuckles ... Thank you.. Just got home from work and seen her for the first time since this morning and she looks bad.. I am about to look up a dosing for the antibiotic (100mg doxy) online. I'm almost positive I seen it on the rat guide's ok to give med list. I have to do something soon :( She is scaring me and can tell her mouth is causing her alot of pain.

While you wait for answers, I can offer that I'm not too far from you in NE Ohio and have: amoxicillin-clavulaunic acid (Augmentin) 500mg-125mg, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim) 800mg-160mg, and enrofloxacin powder for birds (Morning Bird "Enrotex" brand version of Baytril) 2.5 grams/100 gram (2.5%). Also tramadol 50mg, diazepam 5mg, prednisone 2.5mg, methylprednisolone (Medrol) 4mg. If any of those would help this baby's survival more than doxy, I'll get it to her! Experts, please let us know.

I will send you breakdown and dosing for the Doxy in a private message.
It can help make her more comfortable but it will no where near solve the
seriousness of her issue. She definitely needs a vet. I'm personally not
familure with any safe vets in your area, I hope another member might.

Since this is serious, can you or someone else help facilitate a safe vet visit (perhaps via a licensed rehabber) for this poor baby anywhere? Shellbee said "I will do whatever it is to save her, just tell me!" and I'm also willing to help drive if she can't. DC, Philly, even NYC aren't unreasonably far from Pittsburgh.

I’m sending a private message with the name of someone to contact that might have a vet resource near you.

WE NEED HELP ASAP. Posting an update for Shellbee with her consent.

Zoomie still has her overgrown teeth.
Isn't doing well, is in pain, eye is swollen shut.
Mel1959's contact is working to find a vet, but hasn't yet.
I delivered some of all my medications yesterday, listed below.
The dose of Valium via stepnstone given last night had no noticable effect when they attemped tooth trimming again. She struggled and ran like crazy for a long time. It was given in a piece of avocado, measured first in a 0.5ml syringe. Stirred the hell out of it.
Zoomie has had 3 doses of doxy via stepnstone on the 13, 14, & 15th but not yet today.
She's barely eating or drinking, has slept all day and yelping when offered water.

Shellbee understands Zoomie will have to be grabbed and held and have the lower incisors cut TONIGHT no matter what BUT that won't deal with the worsening infection or the uppers that are into the palate.

HELP NEEDED:

Can more Valium be given? I'm messaging stepnstone directly about this.
Which antibiotic is best to stack with the doxy? I really think this needs to be hit hard.
Dosing for meloxicam unless another anti-inflammatory is better.
Guidance for pain relief: anti-inflammatory enough or tramadol dosing (and how long to wait after Valium?)
Facilitation to get in with a safe vet within ~6 hours of Pittsburgh, PA
Any tips for the trimming.

The plan:

Cut lowers tonight no matter what, but try to get Valium into her first
Get the doxy into her and hopefully other medications??? (Need help!!!)
Wait as long as possible for uppers to be done by a more advanced caregiver

Weight: 457g

Antibiotics:
doxycycline 100mg, amoxicillin-clavulaunic acid (Augmentin, Clavamox equivalent) 500mg-125mg, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim aka SMZ-TMP) 800mg-160mg, and enrofloxacin powder for birds (Morning Bird "Enrotex" brand version of Baytril) 2.5 grams/100 gram (2.5%) (the label says 1 level teaspoon is 5g, so it should be 0.125mg per tsp).

Sedation, pain, inflammation:
diazepam (Valium) 5mg, meloxicam (Mobic, Metacam equivalent) 15mg, tramadol 50mg, prednisone 2.5mg, methylprednisolone (Medrol) 4mg.

I will send message to stop the Doxy and send dosing for clavamox, SMZ-TMP and tramadol.
With an inability to cut those uppers, the threat triples with them already piercing the palate.
This involves the sinus, the eyes, and the possibility of an infection that can travel to the brain.
Time is of the essence for this baby...

Hey guys, there is nothing I can offer.
Dave is involved and that's a train wreck waiting to happen. You all know how many years it took for me to get my permits, I've got too much to lose to dabble in anything involving him.
I'm also on the opposite side of the state...6+ hours.
Perhaps SquirrelsRuleandBunniesToo would be able to help and she's a lot closer, a rehabber, a vet, and an accomplished surgeon.

(also, those snowflakes are horribly irritating, I know they are meant to be festive, sorry.)

I know a lot of folks have been attempting to help here and I don't want to add to the too-many-chefs in the kitchen issue. But this squirrel needs help right now. If you can't get her to a vet, I would trim those teeth ASAP, since Doxy has already been started, you might stack clavamox on top of the Doxy.

To aid with trimming, get a pencil situated behind the bottom teeth. The pencil can be carefully pushed back which will hopefully force her mouth open enough to expose enough of the top teeth for them to be trimmed. This is a 2 person job due to the extra long top teeth (one person to hold the burritoed squirrel, one person to do the trimming). It should be possible to expose enough of the top teeth to trim. These teeth have to be trimmed with or without valium, physically restrain using burrito method (wrap/cocoon the squirrel from the neck down with a sheet or large fleece or a towel) so that just her head is free. Placing a small piece/flap of cloth over her eyes often helps to reduce her panic.

I would try the meloxicam to reduce swelling and pain. I will PM dosing.

I agree along with the many pm's I've heard about floating around. :shakehead

Through receiving pm's I have suggested stopping the Doxy and Valium and sent dosing for Clavamox, SMZ-TMP and tramadol.
Considering the backward teeth have already involved puncturing the palate and the swollen eye, it is imperative this squirrel be seen and evaluated by a vet.
I have offered my assistance to get this squirrel seen by my veterinarian.

We last spoke briefly in the middle of the night (Shellbee works in an operating room, mandated to take extra shifts) so I don't have a full update. But Zoomie started her new regimen of SMZ-TMP, clavamox right after I got stepnstone's dosing and she had taken ibuprofen just before that regimen came in late last night!

MORE HUGE THANKS TO STEPNSTONE! There's a tentative vet visit! The earliest possible is 6 days away. Hoping the medications and home trimming will keep her with us until then and that the ER line isn't too long for her to be seen!

I tried contacting many people for Shellbee and Zoomie over 4 days but stepnstone has done it all from the start- the vet and the medicine and everything- thank you so much!!!
