Our sweet skittles got his tail caught in a part of a chair and pulled it out degloving the end of his tail. I am attempting to find a veterinarian that will treat squirrels, does anyone know if the fur will regrow? I don’t want them to amputate the end of his tail if it will grow back. Does anyone have any experience with this or advice?

There are several vets in various parts of Florida that see squirrels. If you give me an idea of where you are I will post the vets I know.

Is it mostly the end, that will break off quite easily.

My Little Girl got a splinter in her tail which I was unaware of at first then I realized it was infected.
I took her to Dr Emerson in Port Orange FL. She had to shave most of her tail hair to find the cause of infection (that's when she discovered a splinter and is was very bad)
With antibiotics and topical salve her tail healed up perfect and YES all the hair grew back 👍

Like Mel said let us know what area your in....I'm just going to say it's well worth your drive to go see Dr Emerson SHE IS AWESOME 👌

It’s about 2-2.25” I’d say. I’d post a pic but it’s not working. I found another thread about this happening to the same age squirrel and the responder said at the risk of infection is low and the squirrel can usually take care of it.

He keeps licking it. He’s eating and snuggly. I gave him formula and a few nuts when it first happened. Anything else I can do to comfort him? And he’s getting lots of cheek scratches and snuggles. Is there a safe pain medication or numbing agent?

I’m about an hour south of Tampa. I found one local vet that treats squirrels which is good to know but she’s not in till Friday. I got some vetracyn spray which is safe for them to lick. We had amazing results with chickens with that product. It’s very soothing and supposed to help ease their need to lick but he wasn’t too amused when I sprayed his tail with it. He’s forgiven me but he was vocal about my betrayal. 😬

My boy Conker had the end of his tail broke off, about 2 inches (which I kept ) causes no problem, kind of like a lizard how their tails Snap off.
Do you see anything like infection?
If not I'm sure it will mend.
If he's in pain metacam would work but it's an RX.
Wish we could see a pic....

Was the vet you called Dr. Zellner? There’s also a vet hospital in Deland that sees wildlife.

Dr.Pam worked with Dr. Emerson in Port Orange for many years, she once did a huge surgery on my beloved Charley Chuckles, had to sew his whole belly up and he turned out perfectly....she is very good too 👍

UPDATE: Skittles is doing great. He doesn’t seem bothered by the tail bone sticking out, which is mostly hidden in the fur of the rest of his tail. I hope that when the bone eventual comes off that the shortened length won’t cause him any balance issues but so far he seems as agile as ever. Thanks everyone for the responses and concern. He’s such a sweet little guy and we just love him so. 💗
