So I have another critical, but hopefully we will have better results this time. I will try and get a photo of the abscess in a few when I can stop crying over the other baby I just lost. Anyways this is another little boy seems about 5-6 weeks. I have done one round of hydration fluid and he is on the heating pad. He seems ok other than what appears to be a bite wound from something on the belly. Fairly good size abscess. Haven’t had a chance to clean him up it’s a crazy day at work. But he is drinking. I have clavamox liquid on hand, and Baytril also Liquid pred. Anyways I have dosing instructions for all three. He is 84g.

Tuff, I am so sorry for the loss of the first baby boy. I know it is hard when we do everything we know to do and they can’t make. It gives me comfort to think that they are going back to the almighty’s hands.

Let’s see a picture of boy number 2 when you can catch your breath:hug:hug

Hey Tuff,

You got a hairy little boy there. His penis concerns me. Could there be maggots there. I can’t see the abcess. Is it the brown sticky/scabby looking on the right?

I am so concerned that I would mix up 1/2 tablet of the capstar powder in 1 ml of water and use part of that to flush out his penis

After me and Marie put this little guy through the ringer…hmmm good name….anyways we found 3 puncture wounds finally we got the abscess to drain sort of we flushed it out, found a scab on his pee pee, finally soaked that off, did a sub-q and we have a very tired baby boy named Ringer. Praying for him. Will update tomorrow. We have all the meds and love he can stand.

So for the meeting of the minds here, we dosed him 0.05 ml of Clavamox, considering we don’t know what these wounds are from (found 3 punctures, one being rather large hole) anyways is clavamox the best for this. The other 2 wounds are much smaller.

Hi Tuff:
Since the origin of the puncture wounds is unknown, one of the likely possibilities to consider is that these are bites and if so, a cat bite must be considered. The typical cat bit is a puncture rather than a tearing of the skin as seen with bites from many other species. Developing an abscess is also relatively common with cat bites because of the fact that the typical cat bites are only puncture wounds rather than lacerations. Thus bacteria can be deposited deep into the skin and an infection can likely develop. Often, a pus pocket (abscess) will form as there is no "easy" way for these wounds to drain. If this is a bite and especially if this is a cat bite, using Clavamox is a excellent choice of antibiotic!

You mentioned that you had the dosing instructions for the Clavamox and I assume that you prepared this liquid from a crushed tablet and mixed the powder with a certain amount of water. IF you are using actual Clavamox Drops and it is mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions, this will yield 62.5mg per ml (50mg of amoxicillin + 12.5mg of clavulanic acid). IF and ONLY IF you are using the actual Clavamox Drops, your dosing of 0.5ml may be excessive because the dose recommended by the manufacturer (Zoetis) for use in dogs is 1ml/4.5 kilograms. Your little Squirrel only weighs 84 grams (0.084 kilograms). Just FYI.

I'm glad that the little guy is drinking! Since he is probably in at least some degree of pain from current conditions, a suggestion might be to treat his discomfort with an NSAID (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug) such as ibuprofen or meloxicam (Metacam is a veterinary brand for meloxicam). Thanks for taking care of this Little One!

This morning we are at 86g and hungry. Snickerbar is helping with meds and dosing until I get the hang of everything. His pee pee looks Normal this morning. He got a 2-1 split formula. We are giving .05 of Clavamox liquid at it is 40mg p/ml. Everything is looking up this morning definitely not out of the woods yet. Pray for Ringer…

Yes I did it was late and I was emotionally taxed at that point. * Can someone change what I wrote initially because I don’t want someone OD’ing a baby that just happens to be reading. *♀️ Ringer is doing great at this point. He doesn’t have the strength yet to latch on to the nipple but he is holding it with his wittle feet..:love he is stronger this morning than yesterday so we on the up swing as long as I can keep him there.

I’m ok, I cried a good bit about the first little boy and him crashing on me. No matter what I did I just couldn’t turn him around. I was working on Ringer with tears in my eyes. Now I need to find Ringer a buddy. So he is about 5 weeks and started turning that tail over his back.

Is your Little One still seizing Tuff?

After a small dosage of Valium he stopped, he’s drunk, he ate a little like 4ml, no fever, we gave him a dose of Baytril also to fight off any other bacteria. He is going home with Marie because she can sub-q him since the seizing went on for so long. We know that it wasn’t maggots it was 2 large bot flys in him that were removed. Could possibly be one more in there that we can’t get out because we killed it with the capstar, the maggot info came from another rehabber. This has been by far the toughest 2 days. Two criticals, one crashes, the other crashes the next day. Y’all pray for Ringer…he is fighting so we have to fight for him.

Of course the internet is like a information super highway. Could there be a botfly in his brain or could they have cause this? I mean it was about 30-45 min after giving the second dose of capstar? Just trying to figure out the why???

You can't believe everything that's on the internet.

Bot fly's are skin-dwelling parasites, the brain would have to be assessable.
Maggots can cause internal tissue damage and penetrate into the base of the brain.
The why (seizure) could be between the meds and the internal shock from the parasites
removal or possibly the combination on an already compromised body.

I would keep him on valium or another anti-seizure med (gabapentin) for awhile since he is on Cipro which lowers seizure threshold.

Marie was going to discontinue the Baytril and continue with the Clavamox.
Hopefully the seizures will be self limiting. I looked up the side effects for Capstar and was surprised to see that seizures are a rare side effect in the very young and very small.

So I came over to check on him (I can’t stay away from this little guy). I got here I checked him out to see how he was and he had started twitching again. By the time I grabbed my drink from the jeep he was having a seizure. We gave him his seizure meds and he is relaxing, resting. I was really hoping we would be on the up swing a little since we got him to take 4 ml of formula at around 3. He won’t take any formula. Marie had already sub-q him. At least he isn’t seizing now. Now we wait..

TubeDriver

Did not know that. Capstar generally is very safe. The active ingredients are metabolized VERY quickly, it should be completely out of his system with 24 hours.

(SB) Just a quick update,

Little Ringer is still here and no more visible twitches or seizures since that last episode last night. He took a full feeding late /1:00 am and again earlier this am. He’s still sort of off; kind of slow to take the nipple, a little sluggish overall but alert and responsive otherwise. I figure he’s got a chance if he’s come this far. Going to let him sleep and hopefully optimistic that when all the drugs wear off he will be ok . The places where the larvae were are already looking so much better :)

Any update on Little Ringer?

He is super tired and slow…but he is trying to run everywhere especially if you have your hands on him. He keeps his head down and he has a funny gait to him as he moves, eyes are still sort of sad looking. Marie weighed him this morning and he is at 85g so only one gram under yesterday morning. Marie said there has been no more seizures today. He is just wore out and time will tell how much damage he has from the seizures.

The sad looking eyes, the strange gait, very hairy yet so small - sure he's underfed but the overall body size/length I mean - the head movements you described to me, inability to grasp the syringe and to feed properly... hmmm... could we, by chance, be dealing with a little dwarf on top of all that??? He definitely has that dwarf look. For whatever reason some dwarfs are prone to seizures. Light or sounds could be stimulus for the them. A video of him walking would also help determine whether he’s a dwarf or not. If he is, hang on, you’re in for a heck of a ride! 😍

There are 3 videos on page 2. The best we could get anyways. This far the seizures have stopped. We are pretty sure we have figured out the why, now to just wait and figure out if he is going to recover from it all. He was sleeping all flat out on his belly or legs tucked under and his nose on the ground. Now he is sleeping more in a little ball with his legs pulled up and his head tucked. If you get anything near his mouth he wants to eat it lol. It’s the cutest thing ever. We are feeding him at 6-7%. He just doesn’t suckle right. He likes the taste of his meds which is weird to me because Tuff could smell anything in his food and was like nope. Anyways he is a sweet little nugget.

I vote dwarf baby. He has a dwarf “ bumble” and it would seem dwarf babies often look like they are looking down right in front of them when they bumble. Many “ bunny hop “— it’s their wonky joints. I thicken formula for my dwarfs— and use a mini miracle nipple— and go reeeeeal slow. They can aspirate when you look at em! We need a conference call— Mel (queen of dwarfs), Betsy, you, me and any other dwarf folks.

Good luck with finding foods he’ll eat. If all else fails— try bacon— turkey bacon low sodium cooked crispy in the nuker. One for me— some for Cinco. That’s Sunday morning at our house(Cinco is my darling non eater). Other dwarfs eat block!

I am certainly NOT an expert but in that video he looks very dwarf like. In the other pics I wouldn’t even give an opinion.

Just a thought… check the belly, chest and axilla for infection. I had a cat caught baby once that was on Cipro. I passed it off to another rehabber. Two days later I got a frantic late night call that a huge abscess had ruptured in the axilla. It was a gaping wound. The rehabber noted that the baby never slept in a normal fetal ball. It slept like that. After the wound was healed the baby slept in the normal position.

Mel1959

Dwarf was my assessment as well. Yes, dwarfs come in all levels of function. At this point I think there’s too much “other stuff” going on to get a clear look at his abilities. The head down position is concerning….however, I will say that Joey took on that position at times and there wasn’t anything wrong with him. Rule out HRT4SQRLS possibility first. The antibiotic can also make them feel “punky”….just not quite themselves.

When Joey landed in my lap over 5 years ago it had been many, many years since I had rehabbed a baby squirrel. When he didn’t grow and gain weight like I thought he should I figured I must be doing something wrong. I tried Esbilac, Fox Valley 20/50 and added Ultraboost….he still didn’t grow. It was then that I learned, through the wonderful folks here on TSB, that dwarf squirrels existed.

As time goes on and you provide sound nutrition for him and he still doesn’t grow, you will know for sure that you have a dwarf.

He shouldn’t be defined by A and M’s. :rotfl This little guy has a story to tell that’s still being written.

You are exactly right!!!! He is doing well today, just a little more active. Peeing pooping eating sleeping is the consistency of his day. He is up to 93g this morning taking 6ml and still on Clavamox 2 x a day. I was reading up on abscesses on the board. Is there a different antibiotic for him to help clear these up faster that wouldn’t compromise him in anyway. We have about a once a day diarrhea going on right now, but I do believe that is cause from the AB. I added a probiotic to his formula to assist with the diarrhea, again it only really happens once a day. From what I have read the dwarfs have super colons. He is super sweet and seems to just take off running not knowing or caring where he might be going lol. But just general walking, it’s not something he is going to do. I am feeding him in the middle of my bed on a pillow :laugh2 He wants to eat everything, his feet, my fingers, blankets, lol anything that gets near his mouth he is trying to nurse it. He still has really no concept of how to suckle until he falls asleep while eating then I have to rub on him to wake him up and get him out of the trance he seems to get into. We are still seizure free!!!! I do have meds on hand just in case. Other than that I fall in love with him every single minute. I do have a forever home for him at this time. They are perfect for him and it will be gut wrenching to let him go but I have to do what is best for Ringer. I will let them announce who they are. Until then I am thankful that Snicker bar and the members here that believe in my ability to care for this little guy. Every dwarf is different, so a one size fits all approach does not work. Can’t wait to meet you,:hug visit with Snicker Bar, and take the little man home.:hug

Hmm. I thought it might be you. :grin2

You sat on the phone through both of those babies, as I cried and lost my composure you made me get myself together and start the care for Ringer. You guided me every step of the way. You stayed on the phone with me from the first seizure until Marie showed up. We ran everything through our heads thinking of how we could possibly stop the seizures. You have checked on him daily. You are still guiding me on his care. You believed he was a dwarf from the gate. Which is probably why he had the seizures accompanied with the capstar. I can’t imagine a better momma for him. He is a very precious soul, definitely one I will never forget. He has touched my heart in so many ways, even more so than the Tuff man. I will love him forever.

This baby boy is a hot mess…but he is so perfect in every single way!! My postal scale broke, my kitchen scale was acting wonky, so for the last 2 days I thought this little guy was losing weight. He went from 93 grams to 92 grams to 94g last night, to 90g this morning? I was like no way, I went to Walmart and bought scales came home set them up, put this little guy on there well he weighs 98g!! He’s still very boney. Watch out world here comes Ringer.

So far as I access him, I know this. He gets frustrated at the nipple because he still doesn’t quite know how to operate it. He wants to hold it, he wants to stand up, he wants to lay down, he wants to push, pull, bite, but most of all he wants to eat. We get formula all the way to his elbows, it’s bath time at every feeding. But let’s face it, baby wipes clean up just so much, so this morning we got a bath and a blow dry:grin2…he was ok with the water, but I figured out he can definitely hear because the hair dryer isn’t his favorite thing. I am still trying to figure out if he can see or not. Is there a simple test for that on a squirrel? He has very sparkly black eyes. He doesn’t mind car rides. Momma Kim is horrified that some dummy that doesn’t know how to drive will make us wreck. He doesn’t like covers touching him he likes to be in a cave nothing laying over him. He sleeps the majority of the day, he doesn’t move much unless he gets hot and comes out of his cave, but when he tries to go back, when he is chilly, he gets lost and frustrated. He loves his cheeks rubbed, he loves his round little belly rubbed after he eats, he likes the back of his legs rubbed, it’s hard to get him to let you do it, but he loves it. He likes to lay on his back, feet drawn up, chin tucked to his chest cupped in the palm of your hands. He grinds his teeth in his sleep. I found out tonight, thunder scares the crap out of him. He growled at me tonight…right after the storm that came through. He was scared and didn’t know what was going on. It’s kinda sad he really doesn’t play like other babies, because he would just be to precious at that point. I’m going to try and post a video of him sleeping on his back in my hand. I thought I heard clicking as he slept, praying it was his teeth or mouth, anything but the lungs. I’m not worried, but…. Maybe I’m to paranoid? I can and can’t wait for him to be in his forever home, he will be so loved.

Pics from today:

Does this look like a dwarf?

Oh boy! it sure does to me now!!! :w00t When I spoke to Kim on the phone the night you gave him to her and she described the way he was moving, feeding, his awkwardness...? the pic and brief video she sent me... ? I all felt very odd and yet familiar. And then... bingo! It sparked memories of my little Ayanna! That's why I told Kim that same nite you were out, Marie. Told her I wondered if he might be a dwarf - and it seems redwulf did too :D Now I'm so glad others too have agreed and confirmed it :grin3 Most of all, I'm so happy he's found a permanent home to move into :Love_Icon

So thanks folks. I've been too busy to check back until now but y'all rock! Of course I'm in love head over heels now :Love_Icon :blowkiss :Love_Icon

P.S. I had gone to bed thinking about you, Marie, but also about you and that baby, Kim. Great job everyone.

For those that have been concerned and patiently waiting for an update. Ringer is at the turn around I believe. This baby has a lot of fight in him. He has many people that are praying for him. The last week has been a world wind of emotions. I had to remind myself what to pray for because sometime I believe God need specific instruction on what I am asking him to do. God has answered my prayers and let this baby come out out on the other side. He may be a little dinged up but he is alive and doing much better. Ringer is still seizure free and on his way very slowly to a full recovery. Please continue to pray that he gets stronger every single day!!! I am attaching the latest photo of him. Something about his Mama Kim’s love, time, and all the kisses he can stand to get!!! Ringer is a fighter by nature, a survivor, and a teacher of many things at this point. He has taught me so much and I am absolutely sure there is more to learn. The biggest thing he has taught me is this is a marathon, not a sprint. Only time will tell from here, but I can promise y’all this I will hold his whittle paw through it all!!!! 320043

The credit really goes to Snicker Bar. He wouldn’t be here without her. Ringer is a hot mess this morning, he is full of spunk and attitude and willingness to eat. Gosh he is one messy eater. We have switched him over to bunny nipples and he still just can’t sickle it. This morning was the best I have seen him do. I prop him up to eat and it still takes both hands to keep him straight :grin3. He’s gaining strength and weight at every feeding. Keep those prayers coming.

Just a quick update…this little guy has came so far and he has taught me more than I could ever imagine. Challenging is not quite the word that I would use here. I have cried tears of joy, sorrow, and just cried in general. It always seemed that this little guy was behind the eight ball. This week has been all ups finally, we can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel (he can’t but I can) his instincts are kicking in over drive with the lack of sight or minimal sight at this time. I am praying that will improve. When he returned to my care at a mere 80 grams with a really tough case of AP, his tiny frail little body was almost lifeless. He found the will to fight and live. It’s been such a struggle with this little guy. We are sitting at 105-106g now!!!! Full of spunk attitude and the willingness to live and thrive. I know what his future holds and it is going to be amazing. I will never forget what this little man has taught me and I am eternally grateful for the team that has coached me along the way. Here is a short video of him and his attitude.

So interesting train of events today..man this guy has to keep me on my toes. Obviously he regained eye sight and possibly some hearing. Like over night. Man let me tell y’all something. Ringer has attitude. I’m talking ATTITUDE!! I just thought he loved me…that’s a nope. Does anyone have any suggestions. We are thinking he lost eyes and hearing from the seizures. So it has been a minute since he had those senses. He is in fight or flight mode unless he is eating and the latter isn’t an option in his little brain…

I think we can move Ringer to the Dwarfs now. He is no longer life threatening. He still has a story to tell as he embarks on a new journey, stay tuned.
