I found a baby a few weeks ago and have been looking after him and he’s grown from having no fur to growing beautiful fur all over, opening his eyes and running around.

I woke up this morning and heard him breathing with a clicking sound. After a bit of research I diagnosed him with aspiration pneumonia. I called vets/rehabilitation centres and no one is helping me. I saw on a few posts people using antibiotics for a baby squirrel but I have no idea which are safe/available. Please can someone advise me as to what I can administer to him that is easily available in the U.K.

I’m so worried about him right now 😔

Thank you for your help ❤️

Is he still on formula?
How is his activity level?
How is his appetite?
Is the clicking constant or does it come and go?

Preferred medications is Baytril which is an antibiotics for animals, Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is the human form. Augmentin and Clavamox.
Many woman use Cipro for yeast treatment and often will keep/have this med on hand.

Other antibiotics can be used in lieu of these.
Call around to family, friends and see what you can come up with. We can tell you if it can be used, how to break down and dose.

Yes I’m trying to feed him but he’s not having much and he’s mostly just sleeping and walking around a little bit. The clicking is pretty much constant :/

I tried finding Baytril but it’s unavailable in the U.K. I’ll ask around to see what anyone has on hand and post here as soon as I know. Thanks for your help!

A friend of mine has flucloxacillan, is that suitable?

That’s not an antibiotic used in the US. From the best I can tell it’s a beta lactam antibiotic similar to those in the class like penicillin, maybe even ampicillin. It wouldn’t be the best and I wouldn’t know how to dose it.

Can you find anything else?

How about amoxicillin?

It’s not that great but if it’s all you can get, we could dose it. I don’t have a lot of confidence in amoxicillin for pneumonia.

I looked after him from when he was a tiny pink baby and a month later he was running around climbing up the side of the coach and running in the garden!

It was my first time rescuing a baby squirrel, I’ve learnt so much from this experience.

It’s so hard losing a squirrel baby but I know he is still here in spirit 💙💜

Thank you guys for your help, I wish I had discovered this forum sooner!

I know. It’s so hard especially when you raised them so long. I lost my first after 17days. I cried for 2 months. I just couldn’t get over it.

We would be glad to help you if you ever find another baby to help. We need more compassionate hearts like yours.
