We found a baby squirrel on Monday 8/30 after hurricane Ida. We’re not sure his age, but as of today (9/13) his ears are fully open, both top and bottom teeth are out, and tail is starting to get fluffy. As of this morning his eyes weren’t open, but hubby says this afternoon he peeked on if his eyes open (haven’t opened again since) so I’m thinking he’s close to 4-5 weeks old.

We’ve been rehabbing him ever since we found with the help of posts on this forum (y’all are awesome), but my hubby noticed that he wasn’t really eating this afternoon and when I got home from work I noticed a clicking sound like he’s congested. He also isn’t eating much for me and seems weak.

We’ve been feeding him the goat milk, yogurt, heavy cream formula I found from this forum starting on Saturday after we’d initially read elsewhere kitten formula was an option. (We JUST got back home on 9/8 from evacuating.) But we think he may have aspirated some.

We’re worried and don’t want to lose him! What can we do?? Please help!

Call around to friends and family and see what sort of leftover antibiotics they may have. Excellent choices would be Cipro (ciprofloxacin) or Augmentum (amoxicillin clavulanate), but get a list together of what you can find, along with the size in milligrams of the pill.

To instruct you how to properly dilute and dose, we will need the above info, the weight of your squirrel in grams (we can calculate if you only have ounces) and YOU will need a 1cc or smaller syringe that has clear markings on it (they get rubbed off on the ones you use to feed).

I have;
- amoxicillin-clav 875-125mg tablets
- sulfamethoxazole-tmp DS tablets (no mg about on label)
- doxycycline hyclate 100mg tablets
- azithromycin 500mg tablets
- cephalexin 500mg capsules

I’m not sure his weight. Just weighed him but not sure if I’m reading it right.
68g or maybe 6.8g?
When I switch to oz it says 2.4oz.

Also I don’t think I have a small syringe like that. But I’m willing to go get one from somewhere. But where would I find one?? 🥺

You will need a small syringe... at least a 1ml syringe, a 0.5ml syringe is better. Go to the local pharmacy and ask for a 1ml or 0.5ml syringe, without a needle... tell them you are feeding a neonate kitten (telling them this is a squirrel will just complicate things).

Give me a few minutes and I will PM the dosing info...

Got your message but can’t respond because I haven’t been authorized by admin yet. Is there any specific dosage for the probiotics? I’m going to pick those up while I’m there.

I PM'd the dosing info on the Augmentin.

When a baby aspirates it is not a guarantee they will develop Aspiration Pneumonia (AP), but is does mean they are at risk of AP. While aspirating is the cause of AP (if the formula reaches their lungs), aspirating does not result in AP 100% of the time.

Please order some Fox Valley 20/50 and switch this baby over form the goat milk formula just as quickly as possible...

I use generic CVS brand.. .just open the capsule and use a pinch mixed in water. I will approve your membership momentarily...

Hey!!

1) Henry’s is out of stock of the FV 20/50. Is there anywhere else I can order it?
2) Is the 28mls the same as 28mL?
