View Full Version : Gasping for breath

I got a squirrel 2 days ago from a friend who at that time already was treating it for 2 days with Baytril for clicking. I enquired on this platform yesterday regarding his inflamed penis and the advice for that seemed to cure that problem except for the scab which is still not removed because it seems to be inside the entry of his penis. It is however no longer swollen and he seems to be urinating much easier now.
However, the clicking problem has escalated to the point that he is at times gasping for air. As mentioned he has now been on Baytril for 4 days. Is there anything else I can do to help this little guy get better? He is drinking Fox Valley (2 ml every 4 hours) and urinating and defecating fine.
Thank you in advance for your help.

What is the strength (milligrams) of the baytril and the weight of the squirrel?
Is the clicking consistent with both inhale and exhale?
At what points is he "gasping for air?" At anytime or during feeding or after?

Thank you for your very prompt response.
Milligrams of Baytril - 25mg - I put literally 2 drops (using a syringe with a needle) onto a syringe with apple juice (without needle) and then pull the Baytril into the apple juice. Doing this twice daily. He weighs 72g.
Clicking is mostly during inhaling.
He is gasping during inhaling at all times, but even more pronounced during feeding and after.
Is it possible to upload a short video so you can get a better idea of what I am describing?

Do you have a 1cc syringe you are dosing with?
Is the baytril in suspension or is it straight baytril?
If in suspension, I would not be adding the apple juice which further
dilutes the suspension which will change the strength of the baytril given.
I can send you correct dosing once I know the status of the baytril.

I can use a 1cc syringe. I have been using a 0.5cc syringe up to now.

I am unfamiliar with the term 'straight baytril'. What I have is a liquid. Would that necessarily mean it is a suspension?

Noted, I will not dilute is any further. Should I maybe repeat this morning's dosage without diluting it?.

I believe you can although I am not versed in how to go about it.

Straight Baytril would be just plan baytril UN-diluted. Suspension has been diluted
I suspect straight /plain baytril is what you have and would need dilution.
Can you post a picture of what you have? I need to be clear on what I'm dosing.

Good pic, it is in suspension. wouldn't dilute with anything. Prescription is close, bear with me why I check this out.
Recommended strength normally for baytril is 22.7 , the 25mil is likely stronger for a purpose?
How much and how many times per day is it saying to give?

I got it for a squirrel weighing 285g after he was attacked by dogs. It says to give 0.12 cc by mouth twice daily for 14 days.

I am correct that you will be providing me with the correct dosage? Just checking to make sure I understand where we are.

Correction: I just saw the expiration. It's way past expiration, it's junk!
Suspensions don't have any shelf life, basically their expiration says it's no longer working.

Ugh, OK, let me see whether I can get some that is still working. I will get back to you. Thank you for all your guidance.

If you are anyone you know has even a single Cipro tablet - human meds, but nearly exactly the same as Baytril, we can help you dilute it and dose it.

I strongly suspect it might be too late for this little boy, but still appreciate your help. Would it be better if I get a powder?
A tablet/pill would be made into a powder. powder yes as long as we know mg's/ml's.
Find an ab we can tell you if it could help or not.
No, gasping for breath is not good, don't quit on him.

Thank you for the encouragement and advice. I have taken him to my friend who has Baytril that has not expired. She is very experienced and taking over from me for now.
I am looking at buying Enrofloxacin powder (20% (10 gr). Would that be usable for squirrels?
I will also try to find Cypro for future cases and contact you for dosage at that time.

Enrofloxacin and Cipro (ciprofloxacin) are essentially the same drug. You can buy a Baytril liquid (they have generic as well) from here:

Thank you for that info. I already ordered Enrofloxacin from All Bird Products once Stepnstone mentioned my current Baytril expired. I am wondering whether it might be better to purchase enrofloxacin powder as it will not expire as soon as the Baytril suspension?

Personally I think the Baytril suspension would make dosing easier and more accurate. The powder is used to mix in a large quantity of water (1 gallon) and put out for a flock of birds to drink. I've never attempted to do the dosing for the powder, and to be accurate you'd have to weigh out a portion of the powder... JMO

OK, thank you for that input. I considered the powder just because it has a longer shelf life and it is not always possible to get the Baytril suspension as quickly as needed.
