I realize this is a rescue site and the question may be odd for here but a rehabbed squirrel that was over-wintered was released. She was a female who stuck around on and off but looks and size changed so much so that we didn't know if she went elsewhere or just changed that much so we did not recognize her. Her looks changed as did her personality while we still recognized her and other factors lead me to wonder and ask myself the following question: Do mom squirrels tend to return to their own birthplace to make a nest for their own young when they are in gestation? I know some animals do but no idea on squirrels and a female, just barely pregnant has shown up, she looks like that rehabbed squirrel and is more friendly than most other squirrel regulars here. Thanks for any replies!

We are an everything having to do with squirrels site!
Yes, boys and girls tend to react differently to release. The boys tend to roam and often leave the area (dispersal) which is done to foster genetic diversity though I am sure they don't know that and simply consider themselves rugged world adventurers. The girls, unless they are run off by more dominant locals, tend to stay close to home - especially if you offer food. So having a squirrel that you raised and released raising her family there is not unusual at all.

Even my boys who were released tend to stay close to home but then wander.
I have girls who come to me daily for nuts even almost 4 years later, and bring their kids in tote...I need to invest in a NUT FACTORY 🤣
