View Full Version : 6 week old squirrel suddenly making coughing sound

Hi- I have had a baby squirrel in my care for two weeks this Tuesday. He has been doing amazing, and today suddenly he made a sound like he is trying to cough- he will open his mouth and it’s almost like we do as humans if we have a feeling of something stuck in our throat. Can someone advise?

Open his mouth and check for anything lodged in his throat. HAVE TWEEZERS READY.
Babies will sometimes "gack" on something but it should not persist.

Thank you so much! He was sleeping and we would hear a click with the ride and fall of his breaths, I called our vet who specializes in neonatal and I’m very grateful she met me at The office even though they were closed and gave me liquid clavamox to be on the safe side! He is much better!

Wonderful! Clavamox is excellent for aspiration pneumonia, which may be what he has. Remember to go extra slowly with the syringe feeding and let him decide the pace. It is always best to use a "push-wait-push" method when syringe feeding.
