Hi. I found a baby squirrel, likely 8-10 weeks old, while I was walking my dog just an hour or so ago. He initially ran up to my dog and was kind of trying to grab unto her, so I figured he was likely an orphan. He followed me about a block back to my house and I went inside to get a cat carrier to put him in. When I came back outside he was sitting on a bench with a couple petting him. I put him in the carrier and he started calling for his mother a little bit, but he didn't seem too agitated. He's downstairs in my kitchen now in the carrier, cuddling with the hot water bottle I put in there wrapped in a cloth. He doesn't seem to be in too bad shape, but after I post this I'll go do a skin test for dehydration. I've found baby squirrels before so I do have syringes for feeding him and stuff if necessary, but obviously he would be better off with someone more knowledgeable and experienced.

I would appreciate any help you folks can give me in finding a rehabilitator in the greater Toronto area.

Can you post a picture?

How did the skin (turgor) test for hydration go?

Have you fed him anything?

This link is to the first of six page outlining how to take care of a baby squirrel.

Here is a link to state licensed wildlife rehabilitators. At the bottom of the page following the United States there are places in Canada listed. This link is from the National Opossum Society, but the rehabilitators are for all types of wildlife. https://www.opossum.org/states%20list.html

Thanks for the responses. I ended up taking him to a wildlife refuge about an hour from the city, called Shades of Hope. He wasn't in too bad shape and I gave him some goats milk formula which perked him up. He was in pretty high spirits for the drive, so he seemed to be in fairly good health. They said they have quite a few other juvenile squirrels they are working on getting ready for release, so he should be in good hands. Thanks again.
