I have this neighborhood squirrel who looks like has a condition, maybe disease, accident, or born this way. I named him Rikki (male fox squirrel) whose condition doesn't seem to have changed since I first saw him about a year ago. Don't think it is mange. I would say 70% of lower back fur missing and skin is dark gray, and a little wrinkled and crusty in some areas. Fur is also missing at lower belly, and is also that dark gray color. I feel so bad for him. He seems so gentile and docile, and appreciates the few walnuts I give him once in a while. Any opinion on what this condition is ? Even if I can catch him, I know longer have a vet that takes squirrels in my area. If I could give him any medication, or perhaps put it in some food, maybe you have some thoughts on that. I'm also a bit concerned that if this squirrel has some sort of disease, can it be contagious to other squirrels ? Many thanks for your advice.318248

Have you treated for mange? The crustiness sure sounds like it could be.

You can easily treat since he will take nuts. If you have any farm type stores or horse businesses - like Tractor Supply, for example, you can just walk in and buy 1.87% ivermectin for horses: https://www.chewy.com/farnam-ivercare-horse-dewormer-paste/dp/142893?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Farnam&utm_term=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI04T33Mu18AIVd21vBB0r-AypEAQYBSABEgL4DfD_BwE This is just one of a million brands - as long as it is 1.87% ivermectin and does not have any other drugs in it (they mix with other wormers sometimes) you are good to go.

It is usually flavored and you will be using a tiny amount tucked into the folds on the back of a pecan so dosing is easy if you have a squirrel who comes to you for nuts already.

If you decide to go this route, come back and let us know and someone will dose it for you.

I would treat for mites and see if it helps.

Yes, I can order this 1.87% Ivermectin at Tractor Supply store. Please let me know what dosage you recommend. Rikki looks to be about a 2-year old male fox squirrel. If you need my email address, it is randy@moxy-roxy.com

Many thanks !
