Starting to have a lil "Mommy" aprehentions (spelling). Today I switched to 50/50 for my little babies and they dont seem to be going potty as well as before. Their lil bottoms seem to be swollen (not bad), just like they are constipated. Could someone please advise me of what I could do to relieve their constipation? (if this is actually what it is)

How old are your babies? Sorry, I can't keep track of them all.

I am not really forsure how old they are but I'm guessing 2 weeks maybe.
2 of them only went potty twice today and Curly went 3 x's. Just dont know if this is "normal" when going 50/50 or if they are getting constipated.
I read that too Gamma, but wasn't forsure if I should go strickly pedialyte, or go back to the 25/50 they did fine on it yesterday.

Hi RNW,
You are still adjusting your babies slowly to full-strength formula right? You just made an adjustment, correct? Then your problem is probably related to that. I wouldn't worry about constipation at the moment--sounds like they're still going, just not as often. I would worry more if they start having diarrhea--in which case, you'd want to go back to a more dilute formula for a bit.

What do you mean by 50/50 formula. I usually call it 4:1, 3:1, or 2:1 with the first number being parts water and the second number parts milk powder. So 4:1 is 4 parts water to one part milk powder. So, are you babies on 2:1 formula now, or 1:1? If you have put them on 1:1 that is the problem. You should slowely adjust their formula until you get to 2:1 and then stop there. You don't want to put a baby on 1:1 formula because it is too thick and doesn't have enough water for digestion. If you have taken them to 1:1 take them off the formula for 2-3 feedings and give them just pedialyte. That should clear their systems, then go back to 2:1 milk and stick with that.

Gamma...I wouldn't say they are "straining" and they aren't bloated again just not going potty.
4sk....yes I am slowly adding them back to formula
As far as 50/50....I mean 1 part water, 1 part formula. Today I went to 25/75 or 1/2 part water to 1 part formula.

Are you using powder or liquid milk replacer? I am very confused. You should not mix powdered formula into 1:1 ratio because it is too thick and the baby will have a hard time digesting it. I don't think it is even possible to mix it with 1/2 part water and 1 part powder. That would be a paste and certainly the baby wouldn't get that. Are you using the liquid esbilac? Then everything would make sense and you are doing great. The liquid cans of esbilac are already mixed in a 2:1 ratio ready to feed, so that would be the full strength. So, if you are transitioning your baby to full strength you would start by adding 2 parts water to 1 part the liquid esbilac for the first day then the next day add 1 part water to 1 part the liquid esbilac fo another day. Then on the third day they should just get the liquid esbilac with no water added. That is what they should stick with. I hope this clears things up. I thought you were using powdered esbilac.

:grouphug :wahoo :alright.gif :jump :Love_Icon No hun, that was my fault....I'm sorry...I should have told you I was using the liquid instead of the powder.......but instead of doing full formula today I'm doing 25% water to 75% formula. I had already mixed it for the day before I read this post. Thank you for your help.
Well, I dont know if they are "doing better" or not really. They finally went potty today....it wasn't firm...but it wasn't watery either. Moe has a really runny one but it was just a lil bit so I kept stimulating and he had a firmer one. They are all a yellowish color with some brown mixed in.....so I guess thats a good thing that they aren't a glue color (as I read in another post).
But they are all covered in peach fuzz. They look like baby peaches....lol I guess instead of pinkies....they are now fuzzers.....lol
I would just like to say :thankyou :thankyou :thankyou for everyones help....I could have NEVER made it this far without yall. I spend 50% of my day on this board...I just can't wait to see who's posted what and all the new things going on. You guys are just GREAT!!!!:wahoo :alright.gif :jump :Love_Icon :Love_Icon
