Hi!
I suspect pneumonia (based on symptoms) and need help with which meds are best from what I have on hand and proper dosing for these 3 babies please!!
Thank you so much!!

These are the meds I have on hand:
Penicillin 500mg tab (I read this is a big NO but am listing it anyway just in case what I read is wrong)
Amoxicillin 500mg capsule
Amoxicillin 875mg tab
Amoxicillin 875mg tab
Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium 875/125mg tab
Ciprofloxacin 500mg tab
Levofloxacin 500mg tab
Clindamycin 150mg capsule
Clindamycin Palmitate Hydrochloride Oral Solution 75mg/5ml

Weight checks this morning Thur 9/17
Baby #1 98g (she was very wiggling and uncooperative so I dont think this is totally accurate. Morning weight yesterday was 90g. I'm about to get them up to offer a feeding and will recheck her)
Baby #2 94g
Baby #3 90g

I took in 3 baby squirrels on Friday night 9/11. 2 female 1 male. Best age estimate was about 5 weeks (eyes open, eats open but still folded and crinkly, bottom teeth, upper teeth just beginning to poke through, furred tail curls over back but bare stripe all along underside)

weight when received checked sat morning 9/12 :
Baby #1 86g
Baby #2 88g
Baby #3 84g

I don't have the expertise to suggest a dosage, but wanted to make a few suggestions as you wait for one of the med knowledgeable members to log in.

Just to double check, with inhalation pneumonia the clicks come with each breath. The squirrel will likely be lethargic.

Ticking is totally different, the frequency is multiple ticks a second and this sound comes and goes and is an indication of contentment, the squirrel equivalent of purring.

If it is inhalation pneumonia, keep the squirrels warm, try to position them so that their posture is somewhat upright, head above the chest, with there likely being fluid in the lungs.

Don't leave them unattended. If you can cuddle them against your body that is even better. Touch is critical to soothing distress and turns you into a human heating pad.

Hi!
Thank you for your suggestions and advice!
I actually was wondering about that high speed ticking sound and if that is how loud and fast their heartbeat is?

I feel like sometimes I hear the clicking when they breathe and sometimes I don’t, it’s making me feel like I’m trying to find things that aren’t there! When they eat, they obviously try to suck stronger and faster than I allow, but the smallest one in particular (baby #3) seems to get it in her nose sometimes no matter what I do. (1 cc syringe with very tiny hole, baby lays flat on the table stretched out covered in a blanket and I usually hang syringe off the edge of table so I can angle handle down pointed up.) she started sneezing yesterday in between feeding which at first I thought was just her clearing any excess milk from her nose. Then she refused her night feeding. Then I noticed one of the others sneezing. They don’t seem congested but they do take a few drops and pull off the syringe and turn the head to the side for a moment then repeat (perhaps taking a breath because they actually ARE congested?). But they’re also teething and chewing on the nipple now, so I thought maybe the head turning away while feeding was them getting used to the newness.

I double checked weights just now
Baby #1 98g
#2 98g
#3 92g

I also just noticed that no one has pooped today. I’ve had all 3 in a little pouch in between my boobs. They seem to like it there lol!
I slept on the couch last night sitting up with them like that all night so I could listen. I did a nebulizer with saline solution while I was researching and searching for answers before posting here. That actually seemed to help a little!

Just wanted to update that I received a message from an admin about dosing and will update on the babies later!

I know to do the probiotic 2 hours before or after...I currently have YoBaby Organic full fat/whole milk yogurt and it says it contains 6 live active cultures. Is this ok or should I run to the store for something different, like in a capsule form? For either, how much does each baby get?

(I couldn’t figure out how to get back to my private messages to ask Spanky (it popped up in a separate window before and I can’t get back to it I’m sorry!)

Dosing sent in PM... you can use the yogurt for now, you want to start the antibiotics right away.

I think you will find using the capsules versus yogurt a little more effective in helping keep their stomachs settled while on antibiotics. Simply empty the contents of the capsule and mix a small pinch with a bit of water. :thumbsup
