Oh my goodness she is a precious thing!
OK at 4.5 weeks old she is not ready for solid foods. Are her eyes opened yet? If not, she should not have ANY solid food like cereal until they open. After they do, then you can introduce solids bit by bit, such as maybe a little fruit or some quality rodent block if you can find it in Sri Lanka. Her diet should mostly be formula right now until she is 7-8 wks old.

I would offer her some hydration fluids in between her formula meals (no more cereal!) for the next two days. Hopefully that will loosen things up. They can sometimes go a few days without pooping, and although it is not optimal it is not life-threatening either. Don't cry. :grouphug

Cows milk is not good for squirrels. Can you get goats milk? Here is the recipe for homemade goats milk formula. https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?29904-TEMPORARY-Goat-s-Milk-Formula***

Try offering some slightly sweetened water in between feedings. She might be dehydrated. Sometimes warm bath soaks and gentle massages of her abdomen in a downward motion during the bath can help get things moving. Don’t let her get chilled after the bath.

You should really try to get her switched to the goats milk formula instead of the cows milk. Ideally, if you can get Fox Valley 20/50 squirrel formula from the internet sent to you there, that is the formula that she should be on as the goats milk formula is only supposed to be a temporary formula.

Offer her some diluted apple juice or prune juice to see if it will help her have a bowel movement.

Cows milk does not provide nearly the nutrients that she needs. Are you adding any heavy cream or full fat yogurt to it?

Hello Anu. I'm living in India and I've had 2 Indian palm squirrels for nearly 3 months now. I am not an expert, but I can give you a few suggestions from my experience.
I know we don't get goat's milk or Fox Valley here. Don't worry. But plain cow's milk will not be enough for the squirrel as the mother's milk of a squirrel is very high in fat.

So what you need is a mixture of the following:

1. Full fat milk(Cow's milk is fine here. I don't know about the quality of cow's milk in the Western countries, but I've had rehabbers successfully release healthy squirrels raised on cow's milk mixture here).
(Eg. Aavin orange/brown packet. Please strain the milk before every feeding as aadai or milk skin forms even if kept in the fridge. So filter every time).

2. Heavy cream(We don't get heavy cream a lot here. So fresh cream is also fine).

3. Greek yogurt (preferably plain and not flavoured)(I would suggest the Epigamia Greek Yogurt as the Milky mist yogurt is not Greek yogurt and it has a lot of sugar which is not good for the squirrel.

The mixing proportion is as follows:

3 parts milk + 1 part heavy/fresh cream + 1 part Greek yogurt.

Heat a cup of plain water in the microwave or the stove until it is piping hot and then place the cup/tumbler of the milk mixture in the hot water. Look up what double heating is. Don't directly heat the mixture. Then feed the squirrel.

You can make enough for that entire day. Throw it out and make fresh mixture for the next day as the mixture starts to thicken and become like dahi because of the lactobacillus from the yogurt.

I suggest hydrating between feedings when not pooping though it has never happened to me. So certified experts here will help you with that as I am talking only with my experience and from the experiences of people I know here in India.

Clare’s info was very informative since she lives there and has had experience with finding food items that work. Thank you Clare. :grin2

Are you sure she’s not pooping in her bin? You are stimulating her at each feeding. Have you tried submerging her up to her armpits in warm water and massaging her belly in a downward motion? Four days seems like a very long time for her to not have had a bowel movement.

Do you know what she weighs? Are you feeding 5-7% of her weight? You’re no longer adding cereal, correct?

Keep us posted.

That is a correct amount. She should eat between 1-1.5ml at each feeding. Are you feeding ever 3 hrs or more often?

Here’s the two links to the goats milk formula.. I’m not sure what was recommended for your baby whether it was with or without the egg.

We can get goat milk in a can here but not sure you get that.

About her not popping, my CC had issues with that but he was a grown squirrel, I am not sure what I used would be correct for a baby🤔
I gave just a drop of mineral oil.
OR a small amount of (pumpkin in the can) maybe mix with water.
Usually the mineral oil worked best.
AGAIN NOT SURE THIS SHOULD BE USED ON A BABY🤔
However if she doesn't start to poop your going to have to try something.

Use fresh cream instead of heavy cream. Amul Fresh cream is available in almost every supermarket here(Say Nilgris or Gracemart).

Does her stomach appear bloated? Could you post some pics of her stomach here.

Also, what do you use to stimulate her. A piece of cotton cloth dipped in very warm water and gently rubbed along the inner thighs and the genital parts might do the trick.

I was once told to stop feeding milk for 2 hours and to only hydrate with water+sugar+salt. This can help with constipation sometimes. Also, do you have watermelon? Have you tried giving her that?

Constipation is a sign of dehydration. So your first priority now is to hydrate the squirrel. Warm up a mixture of water+sugar+salt and give it to her drop by drop.

She may not like to drink the water mixture. So I'll share what I did with my squirrels:

Morning would be the time when they are the most hungry. So I tried giving them the hydrating mixture the first thing in the morning. They drink up on some mornings, but don't drink often.
But you have to hydrate them cause only then, the milk that you give them will get absorbed. Otherwise, they will further become dehydrated because the water from the body will be used for digestion(and the hair will become more spikey).
So since I had no other option but to get them hydrated, I wrapped one in a towel in such a way that she can't wiggle out(the wrapping should NOT be tight, but the folds should be in such a manner that it goes over the forelimbs but below the lower jaw, and then around the head and body). Then, I put a tiny drop of warm water mixture on the tip of her mouth. After she has swallowed it, I place another drop. So drop by drop, I feed them.
Sometimes, they would be too weak to drink a lot of water continuously. During such times, I give them the water mixture EVERY HALF HOUR (quantity is as many drops as they will take).
Note: Make sure the water mixture is very warm(but not hot. Check the temperature with your finger or place a few drops on your inner wrist to make sure the temperature is not too hot). It encourages them to drink more.
Hope you work relentlessly to get her hydrated because hydration is KEY for squirrels. I learnt this the hard way and I don't want anyone else to be careless just cause of some water.

Stop milk for 6 hours. Please give her the water mixture immediately and for every half an hour for the next 12 hours. So a total of 24 times within the next 12 hours. STOP milk for the next 6 hours. Please make sure she takes the water mixture.

Let the table lamp cover only half the basket. That is, let the lamp light fall on only half of the basket. This is a temporary solution only.

P.S to the experts: I didn't suggest a rice buddy just yet because the baby is already dehydrated. We will suggest that after the baby has been hydrated well.

Give her as much water as she will take. Since you'll be giving her every half an hour, even 0.2 cc is okay. But make sure you give her the water mixture for every half an hour for 12 hours.
It's 9 PM now and you'll have to be sitting up through the night. I did that for my squirrels. Please stay strong and make sure you hydrate your squirrel.

I was told once to not give milk for 12 hours and to only give water. So I would recommend the same to you.
Give only the water mixture for 12 hours. After 12 hours, give her milk.

What is the update in the water mixture? Did you give it to her? How much did she take?
Give it to her every half an hour. Hydration is KEY. I cannot stress enough the importance of hydration.

I am very relieved to hear that.

Since she has pooped, continue giving the water mixture for 6 hrs(every half an hour) and then start giving milk after 6 hours. Alternate between the milk mixture (3 parts milk +1 part yogurt)(ratio 3:1) and the water mixture from then on.
That is, after six hours of water mixture(for every half hour), give the milk mixture. Two hours after giving the milk mixture, give the water mixture. 1 hour after the water mixture, give the milk mixture. Repeat the same steps from now on.

Also, PLEASE order CREAM. Squirrels need a lot of calcium and the calcium in milk and yogurt is not enough. Less calcium can cause Metabolic Bone Disease(MBD) which could be fatal for squirrels. Please order cream as soon as you can.

Milk + Cream + Greek yogurt ratio is 3:1:1

Also, in the future, make sure whatever veggies you give, it is high in calcium. That is, a high calcium diet for the squirrel. Please READ the threads here about squirrel nutrition.
Update and ask questions here often. We'll be there to aid you.

If the whipped cream is in LIQUID FORM and not actually whipped and fluffy, then yes, that will work. You can’t use the whipped, fluffy stuff that is put on a dessert. :grin2

You can continue to give water between feedings to keep her hydrated.

Great job! :w00t

I'm sure not a brand you would have, just an example.
It's in the dairy case in a carton.
Heavy cream is the thick part of the milk higher in fat.

Amul is launching a whipping cream which would be the first Dairy-based whipping cream in India. Dairy based whipping cream can be used at home and it is extremely creamier with rich taste compared to commonly available vegetable fat based whipping creams.

I hope you can find heavy cream, guess we in the US take it for granted.
Of course it's sideways 😶316217316217

Where does she stay when you aren't feeding her?

Is it possible that she has pooped in a location that you aren't aware of? Have you looked around closely?

You say she doesn't want the rehydrating water solution. Does she eat? If so, what does she eat?

Generally, when their eyes are open, they poop on their own without stimulation. That is my understanding.

The fact that she is still peeing is very important.

Since you have changed her diet recently her digestive tract may just be in an adjustment phase.

Have you tried avocado? (Most grey squirrels love this.)

Not pooping may mean she is constipated. Be sure not to give any foods that don't have much moisture. These are very difficult to digest, especially for a young squirrel in distress.

Can you cook some squash for her? No spices, just plain. Serve it warm, but not hot, body temperature.

Is her hair still spiky (standing up) or laying flat like your other squirrel?

Is her belly swollen?

Do you have small scale where you weigh her daily so you can follow her change in weight over time?

Does she stay anywhere else other than her basket? They poop and pee to mark their territory. (Sometimes they see you as their territory.)

Anu. I agree with Clare. I don't think you should be giving the squirrel cereal. Grains in general, wheat, corn, soybeans, rice, etc. are not a good food for squirrels, particularly very young squirrels, particularly those in distress.

I am glad she pooped.

Breakfast cereal that comes in a box is not good either. For one thing, they are usually loaded with sugar, which is not useful.

Don't give her any product with added sugar. Yogurt should be plain, no fruit or sugar added. Always be sure to read the ingredients.

Here we use the terms winter squash and summer squash. Winter squash has a hard rind/skin which you don't eat. It usually will keep at room temp for a month. Summer squash has much softer skin which can be eaten. Summer squash will spoil quickly if not refrigerated. The types of squash that we would call winter squash is a better choice for squirrels.

Do they have sweet potatoes where you live? These are also a good food for squirrels. It will be easier for her to digest if they are cooked, either boiled, baked or microwaved is fine.

Also, regarding the poop. Your squirrel may be pooping over the edge of her basket where her bed is. Generally, they don't poop in their bed if they have an alternative. So maybe you should put an old newspaper under the basket where she sleeps.

Her fur lying flat is a good sign.

What is her basket lined with?

Hi Anu,

I would strongly suggest that you stop giving her the cereal Cerelac Infant Cereals with Milk. By mass it is 44% wheat flour. 14.7% dried fruit. The digestive system of a squirrel is different from that of a human. Young squirrels are even more sensitive to appropriate foods than older squirrels.

Both the wheat flour and the dried fruit are on the "Do not feed" list for squirrels. There are many other healthy choices for her.

These two ingredients may be causing her to be constipated. That may be why she isn't pooping.

When my squirrel, Helen, was older than yours I gave her kernels of wheat that I had sauteed for a few minutes as part of her diet. She loved them. However, they gave her massive constipation. So much so that she didn't want to eat at all and didn't even want to get out of bed.

I would suggest adding the cooked sweet potatoes, cooked winter squash and avocado to her diet. These are some of the main foods that experienced squirrel care givers feed their little ones and they thrive on these.

Your squirrel also still needs the milk and plain Greek yogurt.

Gatorade is a brand, it's similar to Pedialyte.

Rock Monkey
09-12-2020, 10:55 AM
Generally I don't think you should be using the infant hydrating solution that you pictured. It can be too strong for a squirrel, especially if given over several days.

The squirrel should definitely not be given Gatorade. It will make him sicker, not better.

I believe that after you stop feeding the squirrel cereal that the constipation should improve, if not completely go away. This may take a day or two or three.

Fruit shouldn't be the center piece of a captive squirrel's diet. There are a lot of fruits that my squirrel doesn't like either. Don't worry about that. Winter squash, sweet potato, avocado, Greek Yogurt (get the plain, whole milk variety) these are foods that I personally know can make a healthy diet for a grey squirrel. They also contain lots of water.

https://www.henryspets.com/healthy-diet-for-pet-squirrels/

I suggest taking notes about exactly what foods you give at every meal and noting what was eaten. Also note if he pooped or peed. However, the more mobile he gets the harder it will be to track those two. They poop and pee to mark their territory. Also write down the squirrel's energy level and whether the fur is laying flat or standing up. Use your healthy, older squirrel as a point of comparison.

Generally you should try not to change multiple things in the diet at the same time unless the situation is really drastic. When you change multiple things at the same time it is hard to know which things made things better or which things made things worse.

For instance, you squirrel may have pooped because you stopped giving the cereal or maybe because you gave the child's hydrating solution or maybe some other unknown reason.

How hot is it where you keep the squirrel? What is the temperature?

Rock Monkey
09-12-2020, 11:00 AM
The fact that he pooped a lot suggests that he was very constipated.

I strongly believe it was the Nestle cereal that was causing the constipation.

I think the squirrel can be properly hydrated with a healthy, squirrel appropriate diet. See the link in my previous post. Adding some water melon or apple should also help, those two foods are mostly water.

What is the temperature?
thank you so much for replying me Rock...ok I will do as you said..well...I only fed him cerial 4 times...wonder is that 4 times he pooped...after eating the cerial...I don't know what's happening...but I will hydrate him between every meals...and I already stop him givin cerial as you said...now I only give him milk with yoghurt and that rehydration solution...I only add little bit of it to the water...I really hope that constipation will be cured...will see about that...now after giving the rehydration mix she pooped...so far so good...I will stop rehydration mix too...thank you for helping me Rock

Also see if you can get her to eat some of the suggested solid foods, at least in small amounts.

Eating some solid food should help the poop to become more solid.

Can you post a picture of the type of yogurt and milk that you give her?

Also please have a look at the web link of suggested food for squirrels.

Read the list in the link I gave you. There are a lot of options given there and you ought to be find one that she likes.

As far as the yogurt goes, we don't want to be giving squirrels with added sugar. Try to find a yogurt that doesn't have added sugar. Find something that is plain but made with whole milk. Greek style yogurt is preferable because it has good probiotics to help with digestion.

Have you tried any squash yet? If she doesn't like it raw you can cook it somewhat let it cool and see if she will eat it.
Sometimes you just have to keep trying new veggies.
And yes use the list Rock sent you👍

I am glad to hear that she is doing better.

Based on my personal experience I recommend you not feed her bananas. When my squirrel was younger she choked on them on multiple occasions. The banana is too soft to chew, but it stuck together blocking her mouth. When she got older and stopped eating so quickly I was able to give her some, but I made sure that the pieces were smaller than her mouth and I chose bananas that were a little green.

You need to go through the list and find some vegetables that she will eat. Hopefully some will be carbohydrates like squash and sweet potato.

The apple is good because it has a high water content, so it will keep her hydrated. It has fiber which will help with the poop and it has to be chewed so there shouldn't be any choking risk.

now she is almost 7 weeks...
now I have another problem...I don't know whether this is a problem..baby is refusing to drink milk sometimes and eat fruits...like banana and apple...and also she refuse to drink water too...
I give her milk every 3 hrs...and give her fruits between milk feeding... that means after 2 hrs giving her milk I give her fruits and after one hrs I give her again milk....I'm giving her milk as you guys recommended with adding yoghurt...
guys is this normal ? is this call weaning ?
I will attack a lovely picture of my baby here

In its natural habitat, the Indian Palm Squirrel will eat other, smaller mammals such as mice, small reptiles, insects and birds as well as fruit, nuts, eggs and seeds

We have had a number of indian palm squirrels and their humans come through TSB over the years, and it is always a bit confusing at first because not everyone knows how small they are (like our chipmunks!) and that their diet is more protein and fruit than the plant/vegetarian diets of our North American squees. Some fruits can be a choking hazard to babies, though -- like bananas as mentioned above and especially grapes. Grapes need to be halved and that choky thing removed.
Carry on! :grin3

Anu, try scrambling an egg and cooking it. Once it cools offer a little bit to your squirrel and see if she’ll eat it. It might take several attempts for her to like it. Dried mealworms are another option for protein eating squirrels.

Carry on! :grin3

I didn't know that, but they are a different breed 👍

Anu, try scrambling an egg and cooking it. Once it cools offer a little bit to your squirrel and see if she’ll eat it. It might take several attempts for her to like it. Dried mealworms are another option for protein eating squirrels.

Here’s a link. https://www.microworms.in/meal-worms-for-sale-in-india

Mine love the meal worms, I use to get the live ones but use dried ones now so much easier. I'm guessing they are just as good for them🤔
But for a baby the live might be easier to get them to eat.

Anu,

It is great to hear that the poop and pee is coming regularly.

Just to be on the safe side I would be sure to cut the bananas into small pieces and, as you do, always be right there as she eats. I had a wooden match stick with the head snipped off at the ready in case something got stuck in her mouth.

If she isn't eating the milk she still may eat yogurt. Try to find some that is plain, with no added sugar, but whole milk as they need the calories and the fat.

There are two reasons for avoiding sugar. Generally added refined sugar isn't good for them. Secondly, if everything you give is artificially sweet this may become the only thing they are willing to eat. They won't eat foods that haven't been sweetened and furthermore we want to avoid foods that have been processed and have a lot of man-made ingredients. Basic foods are best.

Most fruits have a very high water content. An apple is approximately 85% water. So every time she eats a piece of apple she is getting water. Helen peels every piece of fruit and she is more interest in an apple if it is the whole apple rather than just a slice.

If I may jump in here, an indian palm squirrel's diet is more fruit than vegetable-oriented, similar to stosh's beautiful Costa Rican variegated squirrels:

Carry on! :grin3

thank you so so much for replying me island rehabber....wow what a diet...it seems like indian palm squirrels eat all the stuff...OMG! I didn't know that they eat small mammals and reptiles.. it's interesting..I will be more careful to give her small pieces of fruits that she eats 😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Anu, try scrambling an egg and cooking it. Once it cools offer a little bit to your squirrel and see if she’ll eat it. It might take several attempts for her to like it. Dried mealworms are another option for protein eating squirrels.

Mine love the meal worms, I use to get the live ones but use dried ones now so much easier. I'm guessing they are just as good for them🤔
But for a baby the live might be easier to get them to eat.

thank you so much for replying me Charley...hehe OMG !!! worms...I will try to get that worm thing...I didn't see this meal worm thing in Sri Lanka..so I will try getting that through the online 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Helen peels every piece of fruit and she is more interest in an apple if it is the whole apple rather than just a slice.
thank you so much for replying me Rock...😍😍😍😍😍😍 yes it's a happy news for me...she poops and peees fine...ok Rock I will give her tiny pieces....😍😍😍😍😍😍 Ok I will try to find natural things for her...my baby doesn't like to eat yoghurt.. that's the Reason she refuse drinking milk... today I tried greek yogurt hehe and it worked yeeeeey...now she drinks milk like 6 times a day and other whole time she eats fruits 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
