I am not sure if this is actually life-threatening but I am freaking out a bit and worried there is potential for it to be so I figured I would ask here. Apologies if it ends up being in the wrong place.

I was letting my grey, Luna, run around the bathroom while I was in there with her and she found a tiny sliver of bar soap. It's probably Irish Spring with charcoal but it might also be some lavender soap. I must have missed a piece when I was picking odds and ends up to keep away from her. She would NOT let me take it from her and actually managed to eat the entire piece before realizing she made an oops. Facepalm. It was about half an inch long and an eighth of an inch wide, maybe smaller. It happened so fast. She did the face rubbing thing, voiced a few squeaks, and had a wee bit of foam/bubbles come out of her mouth but otherwise she seems okay now. I am mostly worried about the lye that is in soap I guess.

Is she going to be okay? She is eating some of her salad right now and was being playful a few minutes after the incident. Thank you in advance.

I'm guessing by the multiple views but no replies that she will be alright? She has been snuggled up with me most of the night. Seems okay. Sorry for posting this on the emergency thread, I was just so worried and I couldn't find any posts about this happening to anyone else so I didn't know if it was toxic for such a small animal. It's so difficult to narrow down a search on here.

I think that mostly they didn't know the answer. I have never heard of one eating soap! Buttons off the TV remote, yes; soap, no! I am glad she is okay. I wouldn't be surprised to see some loose stools, though.

A few years back a friend told me a story about two wild squirrels that broke into his apartment through the fire escape window. They had a good time raiding the kitchen, eating apples on the countertop and.... shredding a bar of soap near the sink. There must be something in the soap that they are attracted to. :dono

Yeahhh I was pretty amazed that she actually ate the whole piece lol. Luna is such a goofy mess. I didn't mean to sound b*tchy in my reply to my post, if it came across that way. I was just worried about the lye that is in soap so I thought maybe someone would know how poisonous it could be for her to ingest. I'm sure we've all had that moment of panic when our squirrels get into something they aren't supposed to.

I didn't know if it was actually life threatening since all I could find about it was dogs ingesting it and they're so much bigger so I didn't know if it affects rodents differently or not. There's lots of stuff about rats/mice eating peoples' soap but apparently no one ever sees what actually happens to them after they eat it and then poison stuff kept coming up in the search so I was a wreck all night! Gah.

Thank you for your response! Her stools have been normal so far. I bet she won't be eating anymore soap at least. :gigg

Squirrels are so silly! In my research while waiting for a reply I found some stuff saying that rodents apparently like the fat that is in soap. I did find a bunch of stuff wherein people mentioned mice/rats in their house getting into their soap but since they weren't pets, they didn't know how it ended up affecting them so it got me worried. Apparently I had no reason to worry bc Luna is perfectly fine, though she did take full advantage of all night snuggles that night lol.
