I have 10% and 2.5% Baytril, which do I use.

Also, What’s the dose and instructions for a red squirrel weighing 36g?

What are you dosing the meds for? What’s going on with your red squirrel? I saw you had posted on another thread that you wanted to have the antibiotics on hand just in case you needed them. Do you have a problem that needs treated?

Yes, thank you for the reply! this morning I was gathering things I thought I should need in case something happens. My husband just fed our squirrel not even 15 min ago and some formula went out her nose, she coughed a couple times, finished her syringe and is back asleep.

To be honest, I’m a worrier. I like to be over prepared. I found a store for birds that sells Baytril in 10% and 2.5%, should I need it, I’m wondering if either of those is The right thing? The description on the 10% says can be used for squirrels. I don’t want to be frantically searching for this info when we’re in panic mode when I can know and be prepared now.

Erg, I’m sorry for putting this on the emergency board if it isn’t an emergency. I don’t know how easy it is for squirrels to get pneumonia, but I read it can be a death sentence if they aren’t treated quickly. I’m new at this and still figuring my way through the forum.

I’ve never used either of those, so I will defer an answer to the other folks that might be more familiar with this type of liquid antibiotic.

I will say that just because your baby snorted some formula does not mean that he aspirated some. I’ve had lots of babies that have snorted formula, but it’s never turned into AP. Keep your eye on him and hold him up to your ear like a phone and listen for a click with each breath.

Hopefully, someone will direct you to which med to buy, but I’m fairly certain that either can be used and diluted to an acceptable level to dose your little guy.

Have you also called around to family and friends for antibiotics? Or checked the local Tractor Supply? They have been known to carry antibiotics that will work.

Squirrels can blow the milk out their nose without getting pneumonia.
Blowing it out the nose is the safety mechanism to keep from pulling it into the lungs.

Listen to your squirrel breath BEFORE the next feeding.
If it is making a clicking or raspy noise with each breath I would dose.
If it is breathing easily, hold off on any medications. The possible drawbacks of diarrhea and killing the good stomach bacteria outweigh any 'preventative' dosing.

Okay, thank you so much. I feel like a first time parent all over again with this little baby! 😋
