Hi there

I've been feeding some wild squirrels who come to my backyard.
Been giving them raw almonds/walnuts/pecans/hazelnuts and roasted unsalted pistachios.
But how much is too much?
Are these nuts ok for them?

They seem to eat enough and then grab the rest to bury somewhere.

Wish they were less territorial and wont chase each other off.
Plenty of nuts for them all.

Wild squirrels are capable of balancing their diet so they don’t get MBD from too many nuts. From an economical standpoint when they start to bury the nuts instead of eating them you might want to slow down how many you hand out. Given your location there is a much greater need to have caches of nuts buried then where I live in Florida, so I guess that should be taken into consideration as well.

I have never given pistachios. The healthiest (calcium to phosphorous ratio) nut of the ones you listed is the almond. But as I said, wild squirrels know how to balance their diet. Limiting how many you hand out will also keep them from becoming dependent on your generosity. :grin3

Been feeding my yard squirrels unsalted almonds daily for years and never had a problem with MBD.
