My Fritzie is a southern flying squirrel. He has been missing since he got out when a member of my household opened a window while apparently Fritzies cage door was open. I have looked for him from dusk until dawn, sleeping about three hours in between. I have raised him from one day old and he is now 8months old. He has never been outside. He went out the window at approximately midnight, and at 8am that same morning,I am 100%sure he was hiding behind a post on my front porch and when I started walking toward him he hesitated then ran into a hole in the wood planks under the porch. I called him and sat there for an hour with food. The next day I removed and carefully dismantled the entire front porch but he wasn't there,as he probably exited from hiding once I had gone inside.I have two RatzFatz humane traps in two trees but I gave dozens of large trees on my two and a half acres.I have left food in different trees and on the ground.I have left the window where he escaped open, with a blanket from the window to the ground for him to climb. A squirrel pest technician told me Fritzie may have adapted to the wild despite having never acquired any survival skills. I see other squirrels and possibly seen a flying squirrel but not Fritzie. I would give anything to know he didn't die scared alone and hungry in a corner somewhere too afraid to come out or that he wasn't killed by a predator. I will never stop looking for him. I am asking anyone with more ideas that I haven't thought of.Im in the process of installing feeding platforms on every tree I can,but it will take a while, there are dozens of medium to large trees.
I would like to ask that people who have flying squirrels ,please record the different chirping sounds and vocalizations for as long duration as possible to please email, call, text, to me,I will reimburse you for your time and service. It would greatly help me distinguish flying squirrel chipping from birds and other animals.Because many different animals answer me when I call him during the night, when I walk from tree to tree and among the bushes. I'm completely disturbing the wildlife communitys sleep in my yard.
I also think that if I play a recording of southern flying squirrel or squirrels from Fritzies room and leave the window open,Fritzie might return home. I'm unable to find more than 2 very short few seconds long,of flying squirrel chirping videos from YouTube.

Im very sorry to hear about Fritzie’s escape. My flyer rarely ever makes any chirping sounds, so I’m useless there. I’m not sure how they are when they escape....if they’re scared and likely to return to safety or not? If he doesn’t return the best you can hope for is that he has gotten together with another nearby colony.

I am so sorry for the pain you are experiencing. I will keep my fingers crossed that Fritz either comes home or that you learn that he is living a good life out of doors. Leslie

Thank you so much. I can't imagine my life without him but I have to continue because I have my other pets who need me. I will never stop looking for my Fritzie

If anyone ever has a flying squirrel who can't be released in the wild,I would gladly adopt him or her. I would provide a loving home and would never again allow anything to happen to him or her. I had considered adopting a companion for Fritzie but I never followed through.

My little Fritzie has now been missing for 26 days.
I l ook for him every evening and then an hour before dawn. I have familiarized myself with squirrel sounds but not completely able to distinguish a flying squirrel from a normal sized squirrel yet. Is there still a possibility he's nearby, but is afraid to come to me? He would automatically run up my leg when I would call him and pat my leg...or would jump on my shoulder when I would pay it. I started to give up hope that he was alive, because at home,he loved to surprise me by jumping on me,especially when I my voice would get excited with worry, when I would momentarily lose sight of him in the room in my house ;....but then I remembered that my c(very tame, domestic)at once fell out of his carrier as I was about to put him in my car to drive him to the vet,and he ran up a tree and into the woods, afraid to come to me,but also afraid to be outdoors in unfamiliar place...I was finally able to trap him after a week.

Would someone happen to know,I'd Fritzie would have the reaction of being too afraid to go and venture to find playmates,or,is it very likely he is among the squirrels in trees surrounding my house?
My house is surrounded by large trees and my two acre property adjoins wooded areas on two sides as well as a beautiful wooded cove on the church property cross the street where there are abundant squirrels,a possum and birds judging by the sounds at dawn.
I would appreciate any ideas that I haven't mentioned.thank you.

Flying squirrels do not socialize with gray squirrels or opossums. They socialize with other flying squirrels. Flying squirrels are prey for raccoons and other night time creatures and gray squirrels are asleep at night. If you have a colony of flying squirrels close by there’s a chance he could have joined them. Any noises you hear in the daytime will not be the noises of a flyer, since they’ll be asleep then. I question that he is still close by, but I suppose there’s always a possibility. :sqrrl11:piglet1
