Hi all,
314545314545
Curious about a squirrel that has been hanging out on my deck for a few hours now.

It's not unusual for baby squirrels to get left on our deck by their moms in the spring (I think the moms trust us because we give them nuts so frequently!) but this guy is a bit smaller than the ones we usually see, despite being furred with a puffed tail.

He's just hanging out by the door, and has explored a little and isn't moving around a lot. He has eaten some blueberries, oats, and apple slices that we've given him, and drank a bit of the water we put out. He will growl when we open the door to toss him food, but won't move out of the way.

What's most concerning is he will seem to want to just fall asleep in the middle of the open deck without taking cover, and also that his front left paw seems to be injured. He can use it to scrub his face or hold a nut, but it doesn't seem like he can put any real pressure on it - he doesn't put it fully down when he walks or jumps.

Right now we're just waiting for mom to come back. Another adult female squirrel stopped by earlier, but he growled at her the whole time and so I don't think that was her.

My question is, what happens if he's still out there when night comes? He's obviously close to adulthood, but seems like he might still be nursing/nesting with his mother. I'm worried he wont be able to climb back to his nest (I'm assuming he lives in our neighbors gutter, which is where most of the squirrels that stop by seem to come from - the squirrels access it via fire escape.)

If he's still out at night, should we take him inside for the night or try to get him to a rehabber? And if we take him inside, what should we feed him?

Thanks for any/all advice!

The big red flag for me is the just falling asleep in the middle of the deck. This and the foot injury makes me concerned that he may have fallen and have a head injury.

I'd start planning now in case mom does not come for him by dark. Have a plan, maybe even place something on the deck now that he might take cover in before dark. A pet carrier place up higher but accessible, with lots of fleece or the like.

If you do bring him in, remember dark, warm and quiet. Water in a shallow dish, veggies and apples / blueberries would be fine for now. Also maybe try to find a rehabber that can help assess him and help to decide if he is okay and put out in the morning or if they need to take him in until he is ready to be released.

Thanks for looking after him!

Thanks Spanky. We set out a box for him last night but he didn't climb into it, he spent the night curled up in a corner of our deck. It was raining, poor thing - we draped garbage bags/ponchos over where he was and tried to make sure he didn't get rained on too much. We put out some towels as well.
Today he is just sitting cold out and wet outside our door.

We are going to try to capture him today.

We are in NYC, so we are planning to bring him to the Wild Bird Fund on the Upper West Side unless you know any rehabbers in this area that would take him?

Hello, urbansquirrelfriend, from up in the Bronx :grin2. I am going to private message you the name of an excellent Brooklyn rehabber. She and her daughter are both licensed and love squirrels. I think she can help you with him. The Wild Bird Fund is also excellent and they probably would call her, anyway -- so try her first. Thank you for caring about this little cutie.

Thank you so much! She can take him, so it's just a matter of nabbing the little guy.

He is safe & sound with her!!! Happy that he's out of the rain and has a place to get some r&r while his leg heals and he wilds up. :bliss
