Hi, we have a family of squirrels that live in our garden. Today we found one which was unable to use its back legs. It wasn't able to climb properly. It doesn't seem to have any cuts and it's limbs don't seem to be in awkward positions at first glance but its hind legs are limp. Any advice on how to best treat this? Some rest and see how he copes overnight? We can't get him to a vet currently due to lockdown. We have him in a make shift cage (a bin) with some old clothes for nesting in and some oats/nuts. Thanks in advance.

Is there any way you can get your hands on any prednisone or prednisolone? They are strong anti-inflammatory steroid meds - often used for humans. Likely this baby had an accident or attack of some kind. Sometimes the paralysis is caused by internal swelling that is pressing on nerves, and if you can quickly get rid of the swelling the nerves will regenerate.

Try to set his area up with something on the bottom that will show if he is urinating - paper towels or tissues or something. If the damage is high enough that the ability to urinate is injured, it is very bad.

In the morning after he wakes up, pinch his toes hard enough that it would hurt a little and see if there is ANY movement at all in the legs. Poor baby.

Ozzy, in the upper right corner of each post it has the screen name of the poster and where they are from. Unfortunately, this person is from the United Kingdom. We get folks from all over the world here.
