I’ve been giving nuts and seeds to a nursing mama for a few weeks. She has a nest of babies in the wall-thru heating unit of another apartment in my building. They could be anywhere from 3 to 9 weeks old. My building super had an “exterminator/wildlife remover(?)” set a trap for her early this week and the plan was apparently to call them when she was caught and they were going to retrieve the babies and then supposedly relocate them all to a park in the Bronx. Well she was caught in the trap last night and spent it stuck in the rain. The super also said she got her teeth or jaw stuck in it somehow and he had to unstick her, so she may be injured. The exterminator can’t come until tomorrow and since she is not in good shape they called me. I brought her to my apartment, covered the trap with a towel and put a hot water bottle in there. She alternates between being very upset and being lethargic and half closing her eyes. I was going to dry her off but don’t want to upset her any more. I need near term advice as well as longer term since I don’t feel good about the plot to dump her and babies in a remote park. I left VM for wild bird fund and rehabber Maura. Hope to hear from someone soon since I love this squirrel and will be heartbroken if this goes badly. Thanks!
