View Full Version : Gus might have fallen out of a tree
Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum! Two nights ago, my dad found a little squirrel in the backyard who seemed like he had fallen, we tucked him under the tree and left him for the night in case if his mama came back to get him. The next evening he was still there so we brought him in. We got some infant ibuprofen to help with the pain that he is in but I'm not sure how much to give the poor thing. Can anyone help?
Hello! I posted a few minutes ago but I'm not sure it went through, so I apologize if this is showing up twice. Yesterday we brought in a baby squirrel (we believe to be around 6-8 weeks old) (we gave his mama time to come back but she did not) because we think he fell out of a tree and/or was possibly hurt by the neighbors cat. He can't use one of his front legs and he seems to be in pain. We bought infant ibuprofen, as I saw on this website that it could be used. I need help in dosing a correct amount, can anyone help?

We need a weight to dose meds, all meds are dosed by the babies body weight in grams.

Here is the link on baby squirrel care, it can be a huge help,
it's 6 pages long with the next button on the top right corner.

He is 147 grams or 5.2 oz.

I posted on the thread itself, but thought you may see it this way (sorry I'm still new to the forum). He is 147 grams or 5.2 oz.

Keep posting just like you are doing now. Spmeone will eventually see your posts not to worry,
but sometimes it may take a ~few hours depending on who is on the board.
Do you have any infant ibuprofen?
What is the strength of what you have. Can you post a picture of your little one?
Edit: Sorry I just saw that you have infant ibuprofen, is the strength 50mg/1.25 ml?

Oh he is just precious! :klunk
The dose will be .04 for his weight.
Make sure you know where the mark is on the
syringe. We have had so many people misread a syringe.
I'm attaching a link to help you.
https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?36873-Dosing-Syringe
See the bottom syringe and the arrow that says .05?
Go one small notch below that toward the tip of the syringe and that will be .04, ok?
Edit: This can be dosed every 4 hours ONLY as needed for pain.
Keep him well hydrated as any drug can be very hard on their kidneys.

What are you feeding this little one?
Not sure if you have ever raised a squirrel before but
always feed formula or liquids in an upright position, not on his
back. They can aspirate easily and if the develop pneumonia can be deadly.
We're here to help, so ask as many questions as you want.

Well we fed him cow's milk the first two times before we realized he couldn't have it, but we didn't give him very much. I feel so bad for it, but I'm still learning. We went and bought a puppy formula (it's pet Ag, but it isn't ebsilac).
And yes the first time we fed him he was on his back, but then I learned not too, so the next time we fed him he was upright!

OK I'm sorry to tell you this, but you will need to get him a temporary formula.
The formula that you are feeding will cause digestive problems, is it PetLac?
Start with this below, and then order Fox Valley 20/50.
You can order it from Henry's along with syringes (1 cc and 3 cc) and miracle nipples if you
don't have them.

Please read the baby squirrel guide that stepnstone provided. It's a very short read, with

Can your little one walk? I'm just trying to determine how hurt he is.
Are his eyes open or still closed?
TEMPORARY GOAT'S MILK FORMULA:
3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt
Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.
Goat’s Milk
This can be purchased at natural food stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, and at most health food stores that sell groceries. It is a product for humans. Do not substitute commercial formula made for baby goats or other livestock sold at feed stores.
Goat’s milk is available fresh in a carton; evaporated in a can; and as a powdered milk. If you purchase either the evaporated or powdered versions, please blend them with water according to the package directions before using to make the formula.
Heavy Whipping Cream
This is found in small cartons in the grocery store near the coffee creamers and half and half. Regular heavy cream may be substituted if it is unavailable, but the heavy whipping cream has the highest fat content, and is preferred.
Yogurt
Yogurt has beneficial bacteria in it that soothes and settles digestion. Full fat yogurt is best, and a good choice that is very widely available is Stoneyfield Yobaby yogurt. However if it is unavailable, a low fat vanilla yogurt may be substituted. Avoid those that have artificial sweeteners in them. Vanilla and banana are both popular flavors, and the sweet taste of the yogurt helps to convince the baby to accept it.
It has been recently discovered that very small pinky squirrels do better with the ESBILAC PUPPY FORMULA, with probiotics, instead of Fox Valley. If the Goat's Milk formula is used, omit the heavy whipping cream for the first two weeks of life.

Okay we are going to try the goats milk formula! I'm not sure if we will be able to get the fox valley just yet, but we are going to see how does for right now.
It's not PetLac, it's milk replacer plus. It's a liquid.
He has been able to move, he moved himself through the night but he isn't walking. We think he has some head trauma, he has been having some small seizures but we think those have been a result of the pain. We gave him the infant ibuprofen so hopefully it will help with that. But his eyes are open!!

.... we think he fell out of a tree and/or was possibly hurt by the neighbors cat.
If he was injured by a cat he will need antibiotics. Even a small bit or scratch (can be literally noticeable) can be deadly to a squirrel because of the bacteria a cat carries.
Having antibiotics on hand is always a good idea when caring for a baby squirrel. If your family, friends or neighbors have any antibiotics (you'll need only 1 pill) and you think he may have been in contact with a cat, tell us what antibiotics are available and someone can advise if it will be effective against the cat bacteria and help dose.
Your baby does look like he does not feel well and that could be from a cat scratch / bite. Also listen to his breathing.. hold him to your ear like a phone and see if you can here a "clicking" with each breath Gus takes.

Okay, thank you so much. We are going to look for some antibiotics and see if we can find any!
I listened to his breathing earlier and he had some clicking, but then it stopped after a while and he didn't make any noise while he was breathing. I think he was just in some pain, I don't think he had aspirated. It was probably just him making some noises.

They will have a click sometimes that is not constant, especially right after eating. It is the constant, persistent click to be concerned about. Lethargy and loss of appetite are also signs of Aspiration Pneumonia.

Okay perfect, thank you so much!!
