Well I thought these three wouldn’t have any issues, was feeding Jasker and noticed his ear was caked down, cleaned and found a small maggot. I ordered capstar from Henry’s and got rush delivery which will be here Friday....I’m worried that’s too late in the even that there are more that I couldn’t find. I checked thoroughly but not familiar if they burrow. Anyone have a 11mg tablet in MD that I can come and grab or will Friday be ok?

Husbands running to the pet store this morning. Jasker looked good this morning, no new obvious signs of maggots so I’m praying I caught it before it burrowed. I’m seeing I should do AB but all I have is Cipro and amoxicillin, should I do one of those?

I moved this to Emergency the life-threatening section. I have Capstar, it has expired but it probably still works. You can pick it up today if you can't get any at the store for some reason.

I would start with a saline rinse of the ear to clean it out. Use your nose to see if you smell any unusual/infection type odors. If it looks clean after the flush and no smell, I would probably watch carefully and just treat with Capstar for now.

If there are internal maggots, you will know it shortly after administering the Capstar - they will begin to pour out of the closest orifice. That would be an indication to use abx.

Thank you for all your guidance. Husband got the 11mg capstar. When I checked him today there didn't seem to be any sign of any more puss so I am hoping that it was a one off larvae that I didn't catch when I first got them. I will keep you updated on what results when I use the capstar.

Do you have dosing info for Capstar?

You can also crush them up, add water and use as a "flush" in the ears... that will kill any in the ears more quickly than given orally (which is still necessary).

(Just for anyone reading in the future, Capguard is the same drug as Capstar. Capguard is usually what I find available at Tractor Supply).

Yes I used the dosing on other pages. I put as small amount in his ear then gave him 1/4 capsule in 1mL water. The only thing I noticed was what looked like a super small eye booger. Not sure it was a maggot.

So just want to make sure I shouldn’t start the AB...I don’t have clavamox but willing to try and get it but not sure I can without prescription.

Personally. I would hold off. You found maggot EGGS on them when you got them, right? No adults? The one you saw likely just hatched and you got the others off before they could.

I would however, dose the other two with the capstar.

Yeah all were eggs. I have dosed the other two as well with capstar cause I wasn’t taking a chance. Is there any signs I should look for that would show maybe the dead maggots are causing an infection? Just want to make sure I’m covering all my bases with this since it’s my first time dealing with maggots.

Well I’m pretty sure two more microscopic maggots came out of his eye. I had a syringe with capstar to flush in case I saw any. Got them all out but now I’m thinking I should start AB. Is cipro an option or does it have to be clavamox? Thanks everyone.

Clavamox would be better. Ciprofloxacin is pretty narrow and wouldn’t be recommended for anything on the face or head.

I also have amoxicillin but I know that’s rough on the gut. Where can I get clavamox without a prescription?

There’s several members in your area maybe one of them can give you a pill. I can send you one, but it would take a few days to arrive. Getting it locally if you can would be better.

I am more then willing to come grab it if someone has a pill, I live near Fort Meade. He was fussy this morning and only took 3 mL but he has gained 9g so he’s 91g now. No new maggots so that’s a plus. Let me know if any one has clavamox! Thank you!!

You guys are just the best in the world! Thank you tubedriver!! They have finished their two day course of capstar. I have clavamox so just need the dosing. I’m guessing the other two don’t need it since I never saw a single maggot on them. So Jasker weight this morning was 91g if anyone could provide proper dosing. I have the rehab bible with calculations but I would trust the sources we have here more :)
