Our neighbor found a squirrel yesterday and asked us to raise her. I gave her too much through the syringe and she seems to have pneumonia. She is clicking every breath. She is 6 weeks old. Our vet won't prescribe Cipro or Baytril, and we can't reach any wild life habilitators. Is there anything we can do without antibiotics? I do have some human stuff at home (son just had strep).

Please help! In these crazy times, it's so hard to get anything. My kids are in love with this squirrel and we so want to save her!

If she has AP she must have antibiotics. See what kind you have and list them here. Someone will dose it for you depending on the med, baby's weight. Some human ab's will work so see what you can get your hands on. Check with family and friends about ab's. You just need one pill I think.

Thank you for helping your baby!

What's her name?

If you can, get a weight on her. It's needed for dosing strength. You'll need a kitchen type scale in grams or ounces.

Thank you! I just texted my neighbor to get my scale back. :-) . She will have it to us in the hour.

In the meantime, I turned Lucy upside down and rubbed her belly and chest. She snortled a little, and then sniffed, and it sounded like there was water in there. So maybe it was just caught in her air passageway? The clicking has since become less regular. I'm hoping it's a good sign. We lost a squirrel about 4 years ago to pneumonia, so I may just be paranoid.

We have amoxicillin in liquid (kids) and adult (pills). also clindamycin 150hcl.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help us. I'll update her weight as soon as I have a scale.

Is the baby clicking right now?
How is the appetite?

As a last resort, we can use the Amoxicillin although it isn’t the best for aspiration pneumonia.
The Clindamycin wouldn’t be used for pneumonia.

Lucy is 96 grams.

She is not clicking consistently right now. Only once in a while. She doesn't seem very hungry right now. She last ate (gatorade and nibbles of an apple) at 6pm EST

Thank you so much for your help!

Is she getting formula? Which one?

With aspiration pneumonia the clicking is with every breath. They are lethargic and stop eating.
Sometimes they do make little noises from the mouth that sound like clicking.

I would rather be on the safe side. What is the mg of the Amoxicillin tablets?
Also, is the liquid fresh? If it’s fresh, what is the concentration of the liquid amoxicillin?

Gatorade isn’t good for squirrels. Let me get a link that gives information about baby squirrel care. It has a recipe for homemade hydration fluid and a temporary goat milk formula.

The liquid is very fresh, from 3/9 (though that seems like a lifetime ago now....). It is 400mg/5ML

The tablets are 500mg.

Thank you for the recipe. I will make some of the sugar/water/salt one for her now.

Thank you again!

Dosing sent.

Tomorrow you should get the goat milk recipe items together.
You will need goat milk (fresh is best), heavy cream, yogurt and egg.
The yogurt should be full fat and no artificial sweeteners. StoneyField makes YoBaby (vanilla) and French Vanilla whole milk yogurt in a large container.
The recipe is on the link I posted from Henry’s. You can order Fox Valley 20:50 from Henry’s. The goat milk is a temporary formula.

If you are interested in finding a rehabber, we have a member 2 hrs north of you in the Lake Harwell area.

Our local WalMart in N. Alabama stocks Goat Milk.

Update: Lucy is breathing click-free this morning. We are still closely monitoring her. She is currently enjoying some snuggle time with my son. I have ordered the 20/50 Formula, and we will get this little one back to health. Thank you all so so much! I will keep you posted.

I’m not sure if you ordered feeding supplies from Henry’s when you ordered the FoxValley. If not, I would recommend that you call them to add on a couple 1cc and 3cc O-ring syringes and a Miracle nipple. These are awesome for feeding baby squirrels and will greatly reduce the risk of aspiration.

The owners are members here and are very responsive to their customers. They will be happy to add on these items.

I’m so happy the baby is doing well. :)

I will send a PM with my number if you are still looking for a rehabber for her... I have a vet, meds and experience treating AP.
