Mucus

Yet again, I have another poop question...

Approximately 7 month old brother/sister pair. The girl has normal poops. The boy has what appear to be normal poops (appropriate size/shape/color). But then he has clear mucus that comes out of his butt at random times too. Not diarrhea - it's clear mucous and a noticeable amount.

Both have previously been treated for worms with Panacur and coccidia with Ponazuril.

It's obvious that he has some kind of guy irritation, but I am really not sure what else it could be that hasn't been treated for? And like I say, the girl is totally fine. Anyone else have this happen?

I’ve never encountered what you’re describing, but maybe others have and will chime in.

Is there any odor to the mucus? If his intestines are out of whack maybe giving some probiotic will help settle things down. At Tractor Supply, other feed stores and MAYBE big box pet stores, you can buy a product called benebac. It is a thick gel probiotic in a tube. You squeeze a little out and right into the squirrels mouth. It doesn’t taste bad and they don’t seem to mind it. I’ve found this is the easiest way to dose probiotics if they aren’t on formula where the powdered can be mixed into or they won’t eat yogurt.

If other folks have some idea of what this might be I hope they will post it.

No, there is no odor. It's just clear mucus in between or after poops. We've tried probiotics, but no improvement. We're worried about the poor guy. He's not eating as well as his sister.

Also another question -- do squirrels ever eat their own poop? We have been trying to collect poop from him to take in for a fecal. We've been unsuccessful in collecting any when he is separated!

I have never observed anything like that... now, flinging it out of the cage... that is a whole other thing. :eek

I have the same thing going on with my triplet babies. I know two of them for sure have this clear mucus. Sometimes it encases a fecal pellet; sometimes it’s by itself. Did anyone ever figure out what this is? They’re about 14 weeks so still taking formula once a day, but also have two blocks a day with a healthy salad full of greens. (Proper diet) Also no smell. On probiotics. No other symptoms.
