Hi I have a 6 month old male that was at death's door as always when people try to help a orphaned baby with no education on squirrels;she had good intentions to bring him out of the hurricane. She didnt try to reintroduce the baby to mom. It was 4 weeks old then
When she found me he was emaciated from lack of nutrition, staving. And had aspiration pneumonia. I picked him up at 4 and straight to my exotic vet who prescribed an antibiotic. I did humidity showers ( just the humidity for the squirrel as we sat on the bench of the shower) around the clock and got him through it. That was September 6th. Now he is 6 months old. 5 days ago I heard the tale tale sound of clicking when he breathed. Straight to the vet again. Vet saw him that day and had me bring him back the next for a BRONCHIAL CULTURE. Vet said he didnt go far at all fearing he would push a (LIQUIDY MASS DOWN FURTHER)Results arent back yet . In the mean time vet put him on doxy/enro 25mg50mg per mil. DOSE IS .04 cc 2 times a day.
QUESTIONS:
ANYONE HEARD OF A LIQUIDY MASS on a squirrel who is on the reccomend diet but takes 2 to 3 syringes of formula along with his diet that has not aspirated the formula

He is fed properly with syringes and sits up to eat them while the syringe is pointed upward amd no nipple. He licks the milk out.
2) what is the normal heart rate and respiratory rate for a 6 month old?
3) Any tricks to give him the meds cause it's a fight. I have to wear gloves to protect from scratches only and he hates it
4) He was already a picky eater but now he isnt wanting hardly anything weather its formula or solids.

Due to the problems with fox valley amd puppy esbilac his formula was always 3 tablespoons of organic goat milk, 3 tablespoon or organic goat yogurt, 2 tablespoons of heavy wipping cream, amd a half a egg yolk.
Please help because since the antibiotic and vet visits he has become different. Clicking is better but heart rate and respiration are still super fast.

SINCERELY ozzy and his mom

Sorry I can't help you but others on here can. Keep checking back often.

A list of his complete diet may help with diagnosis. And a weight.

Thanks for helping your little one.

We would love to see pictures of your little Ozzy.

The only thing I can think of would be phlegm. Is he improving on the doxy/enro combo with the clicking. He sounds like he has pneumonia with some uri stuff going on. You have him on the best drugs possible for those issue. Keep us abreast on how he is doing. I have never heard the description of a liquidy mass before. Enrofloxin works really fast on AP.

Could he have something like a grape peel stuck in his throat?

I wouldn't know what to tell you about the liquid mass. Hopefully others may have ideas on that.

As forgiving him the meds, I found that dipping the tip of the syringe in something tasty - honey, maple syrup, diluted almond butter .... - does wonders. Make sure you do it more to the side of the mouth so as not to plunge the syringe too far in his throat and cause injury.

Hope the poor little guy improves and gets over this. :Love_Icon

Maybe an x ray would show if the mass is solid or not.
