I put up a posting about my little man's abcess - https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?64157-Completely-swollen-face-Dislocated-jaw-Help!!!!!&p=1309595#post1309595 . Does anyone have any antibiotics? The abcess is completely drained. I only have Bactrim, and from what I have been reading. It does't work the best on that. Does anyone know where i can get more antibiotics? The vet told me after draining the abcess to "let nature take its course" and that is not an "ok" answer. I would do anything to help my little Ragnar. Please let me know if there are any questions or if any more information is needed. I would be more than happy to pay for shipping charges or any other costs.

What form are they? Pills? Liquid? We need that info - the size in milligrams if they are pills. You will need a 1cc syringe to dose with. If you don't have one, stop by pharmacy and lie - tell them you have to hand feed a neighbor's guinea pig baby - and ask the pharmacist if you can get a 1cc.

If you don't have any, get a bottle of infant ibuprophen too. If he hurts it will help. We can dose that too.

What was the issue? Is it a random abscess or is there tooth root involvement?

I’m not sure which antibiotic it was but I saw some for fish at Tractor Supply. I know others have used fish flox so if u can check TS and see what they have someone on here can help u dose it.

I have bactrim tablets 800/160mg. I just picked up a 1cc syringe on my way home today. How much infant motrin should i give him. I tried to weigh him as soon as I got home but he was uncooperative being placed in a bowl to weigh him.

Just an update for anyone interested. I have been working with 3 down-right wonderful individuals frankc, HRT4SQRLS, and redwuff recently about his abcess. They have been a weath of knowledge and very helpful. We aren't quite out of the woods yet. However, he is improving!!! :) I have some pre/ post operation pictures. Is there part of SB where I should post them?

You can post pics right here in the thread.

I’m so happy to hear that there is improvement. That’s exactly the news I wanted to hear. :grin2
You should have the antibiotics soon. If they are not needed, it’s not a problem at all.

Just an update with some pictures. No flushing yesterday. Still soaked the area though. The last pic is one from 2 days ago when we got the scab off. Is the white new skin growth or maybe a wall to more puss (I hope not). Swelling is firm aounf would the rest is watery feeling .

CritterMom

Looks more like a wall to new pus...

Get an x-acto knife: https://www.amazon.com/X-ACTO-2-Knife-Safety-Cap/dp/B000V1QV7O

You can find at any art supply or hardware store. The tip of that blade is insanely sharp. Take the blade out of the handle - you won't be using it - and sterilize it with some alcohol. Then hold the blade between your thumb and forefinger so just the very tip of the blade - about 1/8" - extends from your fingers. All you have to do is touch this white "thing" with the tip of the blade and it will be pierced, but your fingers will keep it from going in too far and hurting him, even if he moves. It is so sharp he likely won't feel it. You will know soon enough if it is pus.

Papabear90
02-23-2020, 03:08 PM
That is what I used to open him up the first time. I had no idea farm and home sold sterile scalpels. Just as info they have a wide array of syringes too super cheap.

*Sigh* thats what I was fearing. Going to soak him (get the scab off) and poke him.

Gotta get this thing gone!!! I dont care what it takes to do it....

Poked it and no pus. Got everything out that would come out. Pretty good amount. Nothing like the first time though. Still watery feeling swelling. Hopefully the clavamox and clyndamyacin will come in tomorrow

He swelled up again last night. Got the scab off and going to open the wound shortly. He is on the clavamox (it seems to taste much better than the bactrim). Not as crabby today, in good spirits. I have found somewhere safe to take him. We have an appointment Monday. 313650313650

You might need to burrito wrap him. You can also dip the tip of the syringe in syrup.

Have you seen any improvement since starting the Clavamox?

I've been using maple syrup because it seems to mix in the syringe instead of just sitting in a glob on the end. He doesn't mind the clavamox as much as the bactrim. I have noticed a difference. Not much of a change the first 2 days but in the last 48 hrs it's gone down a bit. Just thankful its vet day. (Never thought I'd say that hahah)

I hope it goes well today. Make sure the vet does the X-ray. This is critical information because you will know if this will heal or not.
If it’s not tooth related it should heal. :thumbsup

The vet I was referred to was wonderful! They did xrays on him and deained the abscess. Vet SAS aid that the abscess had "marsupialized" (spelling?) Meaning that it had created pockets or membranes inside. Had to travel a bit but it was so worth it. While they were doing the oral exam one of his molars FELL OUT. She said they were not pulling or anything just probing to see what was going on and it fell out. So she's thinking it was likely the cause of the issue in the first place. They did blood labs and a culture so waiting on the results from that (may take up to a week). They are emailing me the actual xrays tomorrow

I’m also relieved that the vet visit is over and was a success.
It sounds like it was definitely needed. Those deep infections are hard to treat with just antibiotics.

By the way, from my non-professional opinion, those teeth look awesome. :grin2 I don’t see any signs of odontoma. That would have been the worst case scenario.
You might have to learn to trim the teeth as the incisor that fell out will leave a void for the opposing incisor. It might overgrow without anything to file against.

I think it should heal up fine now. :)

Edit... oh wait, you said molar. :) He will never miss a molar. :thumbsup

I have trimmed his teeth once and I do his "brother's" every 3-4 weeks. Using a dremel. I have nippers but I'm worried about splitting. I haven't trimmed his recently because of all the mouth issues hes been having lately. Going to give him a few days before that to recover. I'm still going to have him on clavamox every 12 hours. And still will continue with abscess flushing. Still about 2 hours from home.

Which isn't like him, but I'm sure he was out of it with. The vet visit, surgery, and the 8 hr drive today. Hopefully, this will clear up the infection! Good night, I can't thank you all enough for your help!!!

I am so relieved!!! I might even get some decent sleep tonight!

I will post original images of xrays tomorrow.

I’m really glad your boy is on the mend. You have the best of TSB best helping your sweetie. Um—I sure would love directions to your bondage bag. I have a little squirrel with teeth issues. No tops—so when we’re home I take her to the vet monthly. When we’re in Iowa there’s nobody but me to do the deed. My girl has more arms than a Shiva statue. That bag looks like it might just keep arms IN. The teeth have to be trimmed so I’m willing to spend an hour and a half for a 10 second clip but if that bag works—you will be my lifetime hero!

Aww thank you redwuff. Do you see the spot I'm referring to. Small (pea sized) under his ear

Is it within the darker hair under his ear? Is there something in his behavior that is alarming you? Making you think he might not be feeling his best?

No he has been more active the past couple days. Just cautious. I don't want this pea to turn into a pecan! lol

It is. I can take a bit of that hair off tonight if needed. I do have a couple other pictures as well.

The vet called last night. His blood tests are in. Still waiting for the abscess culture results to come in. I have attached the blood labs. 313763313765313764

Hey all!!

He is doing well. I'm happy I made another appt for saturday next week. The spot that I've been watching is getting a bit bigger. He hated the clyndamyacin so much that he decided to dump the container it was in. (My fault, I left it onto he table while dosing him). One of the TSB lovelies is sending us some more.He is back up to his weight before all this abscess crap started happening!! He seems to be getting back to normal. Teeth are completely aligned again too!! He doesn't seem to miss or notice his molar being gone. Hes a strong little bear!! And hes back to barking at the kettle and microwave when they make noise too. He was sun bathing in the window for 2-3 hours today

Hey guys! Good news first-

He is still doing well. The stitches are out. And the incisions are no more than scratch marks, the peach fuzz is starting to grow back. Still on ABs and the spot I am watching is not growing. He is up on the pantry chewing on a cuttle bone right now.

And on to slightly alarming news-
His urine color is...off. when fresh it looks similar to a 50/50 mix of water/ cranberry juice. Pink, not red. I am told that the ABs hes on shouldn't be the cause. He drinks on his own. I have been monitoring his water intake for a few weeks now (marking on the bottle) and hav e been making him drink extra. No diet change other than the flavor of Henry's blocks. Please see below picture of dried urine. I'll get a picture of wet as soon as I can

Actually, I wouldn’t be concerned about that at all. I have no idea why, but Fox squirrels are known to have porphyins which are pink. I read an interesting article about some Fox squirrels having pink bones due to porphyrins. Let me see if I can find an article about porphyrins.

The faint pink color you are seeing is uroporphyrins. It is normal in Fox squirrels. We had another Fox squirrel on this board (Resilie) that intermittently had pink urine.

Just curious, did the vet mention anything about her X-ray in terms of the chest area? The teeth are beautiful but the chest looks odd to me.

So happy to hear it's not cause for alarm!! Thank you!!!

No, the vet didnt mention anything. May I ask odd in what way?

Let me find another squirrel X-ray and put them side by side. It’s probably nothing. I have no experience reading X-rays. :tilt

I'm all eyes and ears!! If there's something wrong or not right I would much rather know than not know to be honest.

Thank you so much HRT

Hey guys,

Wanted to give an update.

The spot I've been watching is just about gone. The vet called and wants him to go to the University of IL for a CT scan to check the roots of the molars and jaw bone to make sure there's no infection in there. I have no idea if U of IL is safe.

Uhm, that sounds expensive and risky. I wouldn’t consider it unless he can assure you that it is safe.
The Clindamycin is treating for bone infection so you are ahead of the curve.

It NEEDS a CT scan? X-rays not enough? But surely the vet wouldn't ask you to do anything that would compromise Ragnar after all this? I guess there's no way to recon first to make sure? Good luck!

EDIT: Exactly. What HRT4SQRLS said.

I agree. I have been freaking out a bit about it since Friday when the vet called. Not about the cost but the safety His urine got darker red. Paused use of the clindamyacin to see if the red urine stops. It was a troubling color. Got darker than the picture that was posted.

I would hope the vet wouldn't put us in a compromising situation.... But I have a hard time trusting people with my baby....

I'm thinking I may go out to Redwuff's vet in MD. At least I know he is very knowledgeable and very very safe.

WHY does he want to do this? The Clindamycin is apparently taking care of the infection. Did he see something off in the blood panel? BTW, he is on clavamox, too, right? That would take care of a UTI if you are concerned about this. The red coloration is likely from something he ate.

The vet said the CT scan after I told them about the spot I was watching.

My thoughts are that he's been on so much abs for this abscess. I cant reasonably believe that it could be a UTI. Nothing off as far as the blood panel. He has not had any diet change other than Henry's Calcium Carbonate and Vita-Mins being added to his veggies- Not sure if these would change it. (He's not been too fond of his blocks lately)

Going to make boo balls tonight or tomorrow.

But the spot has almost gone away, hasn't it?

I don't mean to pester - I am trying to figure out whether this is a vet who is in love with tests or whether it genuinely needs to be done.

90-95% gone there is the tiniest little spot (1/2 of a pea). But NOTHING like it was when he was fully abscessed.

Not pestering at all!!!!

I really think the red urine is related to him being a Fox Squirrel (porphyrins). I remember Resilie was always having on and off pink/red urine. I might try to call PennyCash tonight.

It was especially worrisome because it was getting darker. instead of a 50/50 mix of water cranberry juice. It was similar to 80 cran/20 water mixture.

I feed a ridiculous number of gray squirrels at my back deck feeder and frequently I step outside to find what looks like a Tarantino movie - pure, thick, deep red blood in puddles... I have WATCHED them squat and pee this out - it isn't the result of a predator killing things. I am not talking watered down pee, I am talking what looks like straight blood. I have no idea... They aren't ill.

The spot I have been watching is gone!!!! GONE!!!! :bliss Do you think its safe to take him off the ABs?

His urine has cleared up too, almost clear of the pink-ness!

So happy!

Though not the right time of year, acorns turn pee red in the late summer through winter, yet being thick doesn't sound normal.

In Spring it may be another food source that is causing the color of the urine to turn red?

Biggest concern would be that this is caused from a toxic source. Check to see if an of your plants in your yard are toxic, and if so, remove them.
