Hello everyone!

I have a 5 month old Eastern gray squirrel that was "soft released" back in November. I thought the pair were gone forever, after they didn't show up for 3 days after release, but they came back! They wait by our door every morning for breakfast 😂

Four days ago, they both came in for breakfast. Chip limped in, and laid down on our couch and wanted to cuddle. This is not typical behavior for him at all. We finally were able to look at his paw, and his left paw was extremely swollen. We called Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic, and he was seen today. It's not broken, just an infected wound. He's been prescribed antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory.

Because we were told by the local wildlife rehab center that they would be gone forever, we took apart their hand-built release cage. We just have a squirrel box hanging on our front porch. We've kept Chip inside for the past few days and he's starting to chew apart our front door. He wants to be outside SO BAD.

Does anyone know where I can find an affordable cage that I can use short term while he's on his course of antibiotics? And does anyone have any tips or tricks to get him to take the antibiotics?

You can check Craigslist. You might find something there.

Are you handy? You could make a cage with a small roll of hardware cloth and either PVC pipes or 2x2 boards. It doesn’t have to be fancy.

I would gladly lend you a cage but I’m 1.5 hrs from you. :(
If nothing on CL I would build a simple cage.

One option for the antibiotic is to burrito wrap him and slide the syringe in the corner of the mouth. What is the volume? Which antibiotic? Baytril tastes terrible. Clavamox doesn’t taste too bad.
If it’s an antibiotic that isn’t terrible you can put it in a nut butter like almondbutter.

I can lend you a cage, too. I’m an hour from you on the coast just south of Cocoa beach.

It's Clavamox and it's only 0.1 ml twice a day. We get to do the squirrel-ito! This should be interesting! lol

Thank you SO MUCH for your offer! That's fantastic! Can I send you a PM? I don't mind going to the coast at all. I just drove an hour plus to the vet. An hour out to the coast isn't bad.
