Hi everyone

Before I post regarding my Bobo’s upper teeth is getting too long, but not much reply. So hopefully someone can reply to me this time.

I have trouble cutting her upper teeth because she moves a lot even wrap like a burrito. Is there any medicine I can buy that can make her drowsy so I can cut her teeth. I don’t know why she is so lazy to grind her teeth. She don’t bite on sticks or walnuts. Now her upper teeth is getting too long that start to curve inward.

So hopefully someone can give me some recommendations on what type of medicine I can buy to make her drowsy so I can trim her teeth. Thank you

Her teeth may not line up right for her to wear them down which is a condition called malocclusion. To further complicate the situation, once they get a little overgrown and begin to curve then they really can’t use them properly or efficiently.

There is an herbal product called Rescue Remedy that folks have safely used on squirrels to help calm them. It is a blend of 5 Bach flowers. I’m not sure if you can find it in Bangkok. I’ve also heard of folks using the over the counter product called a Benadryl. It is an antihistamine. They make it in adult and children strengths. You would want the one for children because the adult version contains alcohol. The active drug is Diphenhydramine. I’m attaching a picture out of the Wild Mammal Baby book of the dosage chart based on the weight of the squirrel.

Benadryl will make most squirrels drowsy however, a small percentage of squirrels have a paradoxical reaction, they get all wired/wound up. You must test it first before actually using it to trim teeth.

It really helps to stick a pencil across the squirrels mouth behind the incisors. This will safely keep the mouth open and also help to prevent a cut piece of tooth from accidentally shooting down the throat. Wear glasses to protect your eyes, usually the cut tooth piece just falls away but occasionally it splits or shoots out.

Do NOT trim too short, you risk permanent damage to the tooth root. It is much better to err on leaving a bit too much tooth as opposed to accidentally trimming too short.

You want the Infant Motrin (50mg/1.25ml) strength. If you have a weight, I can give you exact dosing directions.

I don't think ibuprofen will help with sedation.

And be sure to get Benadryl dosed per squirrels weight I would think.

Hi

I think I have a problem here. I can’t access Benadryl without a doctor’s prescription here. Is there any other medication I can substitute with ? Can use motion sickness medicine?

Sorry TG715, I don't know about Dramamine.

What ever you decide to do, make sure you get dosing amount per squirrels weight.

Keep checking back here for an answer. Someone will chime in soon.

Thanks for helping your baby.

Thank you so much Rocky for your replies. Hopefully someone can give me an answer. I don’t want to dose my squirrel with the wrong medicine. But because her teeth is getting too long and I want to act fast. It seems like she start to have trouble biting her vegetables and aren’t looking happy these two days.

I used childrens benadryl for my girl Gemma to trim her teeth once. It was dosed by a member (I can't remember who helped me dose). I used the lowest dose suggested (I could have went higher, but wasn't sure how she would respond so I stuck to the low dose). She definitely slowed down, but the affects didn't last very long so you have to be fast.
As she got older it was easier for me and her to have it done by our squirrel friendly vet.
If you decide to dose benadryl just please wait for someone experienced to dose it for you, and please post the weight of your squirrel (all meds are dosed by weight).
A lady I know uses a tiny amount of valium when she trims her squirrels teeth, but I personally have no experience with that and I don't know if anyone here on the board recommends that (her daughter is a nurse and helps her with the trim).
Please don't give anything without confirmation and proper dosing.

You are right, I meant Benadryl not Motrin. Sorry about the misinfo.

You want Children's Benadryl (12.5mg/5ml) strength. What is the weight of your squirrel?

Thank you . I own two male squirrel previously and never have problem cutting their teeth. One just open his mouth and let me cut. The other one can cut easily when he is sleeping. But this female squirrel is the wildest one. Never let me cut or try to open her mouth. She fight like crazy with me . That’s why I want to know what type of medicine I can use to make her drowsy.

Unfortunately I can’t get Benadryl without a doctors note here. So I want to seek other medicine options if have.

You can give her 0.16ml of Children's Benadryl (12.5mg/5ml) strength.

If it makes her drowsy, you can attempt the trim. Benadryl dose should not be given more than 3 times per day ( every 8 hours).

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of melatonin being used. There’s an herbal product that contains Bach flowers called Rescue Remedy that folks use to help calm squirrels. The other product that is used is Benadryl which is the trademarked name for a drug called Diphenhydramine. You would want the children’s version of this product and dosing is done by weight.

Can you get a second set of helper hands? One person holds burritoed squirrel, the other person trims the teeth. Much more secure than trying to do it all by yourself.

I'll try to find dosing info for meletonin, check back later today.

I can dose the melatonin. Need to know what form/strength of melatonin you have? Weight is 200g.

Use of melatonin for animals sleeping is actually extra-label and any sedative effects are considered side effects. But it is generally pretty safe as long as your squirrel has no renal/urination issues? Probably worth a try to see if it helps calm him down for tooth trimming.

Thank you so much. Sorry for the late reply because I have been trying different pharmacies to find Benadryl. But no luck.

The melatonin is a 3mg tablet. If you can help dose that will be great. Thank you so much again.
