Hi. Steve has a problem with his foreskin. It’s very swollen and his penis sticks out. He’s an old guy. About 8 years old. I’d like to put him on antibiotics. Which ones are best.

Hi have you checked for an injury ? Dose it look like an infection ? Do you see any scabs? Can you post a picture, and his weight ? All this information will help to determine what may be wrong and for Med dosing in the event it is a infection. Dose he have any fleas or mites? Is there any drainage, pus ect; what color is his urine? Is it Dark Color or light such as light yellow or clear.

Hi, stranger! Is he messing with it? Can you tell if he is peeing normally? And is there any way to get us a pic of it? If you had to guess, do you think he has some sort of infection or internal issue causing this or is there a chance he may have actually traumatized the area - like by either fussing with his or even getting it caught somewhere and torn?

this sounds exactly like my guys. His forskin is rolling back on itself. It’s worse than your pic. It’s rolled back so much the penis doesn’t stay back in. No scabs or discharge. I don’t know why it’s doing this. I’ve been putting polysporin on it to keep it lubed and help it keep from getting worse. I thought maybe antibiotics or an anti inflammatory might work? I’m going to get his weight and see if I can upload a pic. I don’t always have luck with the uploading from my phone.

which antibiotics are recommended for this type of problem?

I was checking in to see how his condition is today. What antibiotics do you have on hand ? looking at the picture just behind the penius there is a spot that looks like a bruise please let us know if it is it could be an injury. If not my suggestion would be to start a wide range antibiotic in the event it is an infection. It is really hard to tell what is going on, but in the event it is a infection (UTI) or other starting meds will not hurt.

Did you try unrolling it with some coconut oil or polysporin as a lubricant?

Since we really don't know why this is happening, the broadest spectrum drug would be best - that would be Amoxicillin / Clavulanic acid, sold to humans as Augmentin and animals as Clavamox and now generics called all sorts of things like amoxi-clav, etc. It will help if this is a UTI, too. Can you get?

For swollen penis tissue, vets use a paste of sugar. You can make a sugar paste and apply it to the area. I would use a vet wrap around the back to secure it. The sugar pulls fluid out of the swollen tissue and the penis retracts into the sheath. I have seen several on this board use it and it works.

Of course, there might be infection also so if you can let us know which antibiotics you have I can dose it for you. Clavamox or SMZ-TMP would be good choices.

Edit... I just saw CritterMoms post. If you can find it, the Clavamox would be great.

yes, I use the polysporin.

prednisone 5 mg
amoxicillin 250 mg
cipro 500 mg
smz-6pm 960 mg
doxy 100 mg
