Wondering what you all do when you have to travel (via plane). We are relatively new squirrel parents. We can't bring our guy with us, obviously, and boarding him isn't possible in our state. We don't want to leave him in the cage the entire time, but don't know anyone else who is comfortable enough with him to take care of him, so the most our friends could do is stop by to feed him. Any ideas are welcome! We can't never go on another trip again, and the holidays are coming up.

It depends on how long you will be gone. Your squirrel friend would be safer in the cage than allowed to roam around with inexperienced people. You would have to trust these people A LOT to do the right thing. You could leave strict diet instructions and even prepared veggies in daily portion size ZipLoc baggies. If you give a squirrel a single nut he will retreat with it and start eating it so it is unlikely he would storm the door when Meals on Wheels arrives. If it’s cold leave the heat on... if it’s hot leave the AC on just like you were home.
I wouldn’t leave a caged squirrel for over a week. By leave, I mean WITH a friend coming daily to feed, water and check on him. Even that is pushing it. Just recently a person left their flyers at home in the care of a ‘friend’. When the person returned they were both dead. How does that even happen? I would have to trust this person A LOT. I doubt the person will ever know what happened there. :shakehead
