My 10 week old red squirrel escaped from her carrying cage today when putting her outside around 11am. We tried to catch her for about 10 minutes but she was just moving further away from her outdoor/release cage so we stopped. It has since started raining off and on. 😞. I left the small door of her release cage open with food and extra nesting materials and I’m going to leave her transporting cage where I last saw her with her hammock and some food. We’re checking periodically to see if she’s around. She’s been in her release cage the last 2 days for a few hours and she’s been eating pine cones and other “wild” foods for about a week now so I think she’s not at a complete loss as to what to do. The last time I saw her she was eating something. I’m hoping she finds her way back. Is that likely?

Yes, it is likely. She is young. She should return to the safety of the nest box and for food.

I would continue to call out to her periodically but back off if she travels further.

She came home. Well actually she was chased home by a wild. My husband brought her back inside and she ate and went right to bed. I expect I won’t hear from her till morning!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
