Hello, I have a squirrel that was brought to me, about 3 months old. Person had him since eyes began to open. Squirrel has been acting normal up until yesterday. Found in cage unable to use hind legs. Person said squirrel had no other symptoms or signs that something was going on. Feeding walnuts, several veggies and some fruits. Clearly this hind limb paralysis (does feel deep pain in the toes but not the tail) and my guess is MBD but can this happen so acutely? Trying to get an appointment with a Vet tomorrow but wondering if it would hurt to start a calicum treatment? (Radiographs were taken today that show no broken bones but bones do look osteopenic) Thank you for any suggestions.

Yes, it happens with an improper diet, too many nuts deplete calcium.
A good quality rodent block needs to be the main part of a captive squirrels diet.
Here is the link for emergency MBD treatment, I would get them on it asap!

This definitely is MBD and the obvious symptoms always come on suddenly.... as in fine one minute, dragging the hind end or seizing the next.

Is the baby still on formula? If so, which formula. This year has been especially challenging due to the formula usually recommended for baby squirrels (powdered puppy Esbilac) is defective. The formula is actually causing MBD. Don’t get me wrong thought, a diet high is nuts is the most common cause of MBD. Babies shouldn’t have nuts at all. Nuts are for treats only as they are extremely unhealthy for captive squirrels.

If the baby is on Esbilac, you need to transition to another formula ASAP. I realize a 3 month old might already be weaned.
