A client brought in a 5 to 6 week old Eastern grey about an hour ago. His eyes are barely opened, he is a little under weight. He had no physical injuries, just holding one eye closed. Finally we got it open and two maggots popped out. One of the other techs thinks she sees one down in the ear canal but burrowed away.

We got him started on fluids, he is a little pale. He is bright and alert and ravenous, urine is a good color.

This is a new one for me, we know what to do with kittens and puppies but trying to find a dose for the little baby(60-70grams). We were going to do capstar orally and weren’t sure about a capstar flush in the ear or not.

Thanks for any help!

Yes to capstar

Check any open wounds, any orifaces including the anus and penis for maggots, and check every square inch of his body for fly strike!

Treat for shock and add an antibiotic for the dying maggots after capstar. Capstar can be given for several days.

None, there isn’t a single wound on him. Checked in his mouth to. His eye was the only place with a little blood around it and he had been scratching at the eye consistently so likely self inflected. He’s not acting bothered by the eye since we pushed out the two.

Trying to determine if a capstar flush into that ear would be alright. The oral capstar we will definitely do but wanted to make sure that dosing didn’t need to be more dilute for a young baby or if by gram would be sufficient.

11.2? Mg capstar cut into quarters. Crush 1 quarter in small amt of water and give orally. Don't know about putting in eye. The oral should take care of that.

We did give 1/4 crushed in water orally and dropped a drop into the ear and about five minutes later the maggot fell out of the ear. Starting AB now, which has him super angry and not wanting to latch onto a nipple now. He liked his pedialyte before but now refusing since doing the oral meds.

So hopefully he will be happier when I try a little formula in his next feeding.

Capstar ear flushed are fine... I have had to do this in the past and had no issues.
