i have a 4wk-ish old eastern gray who i've been taking care of since last thursday. about 3 days ago, while i was trying a new syringe, the squirrel aspirated. i saw milk coming out of his nose and immediately turned him upside down and began wiping away the milk (esbilac) as he sneezed it out. i've noticed he's become increasingly lethargic, is difficult to wake up for his feedings in the morning, and there's a clicking noise he makes when he breathes. there's no doubt in my mind that he has pneumonia. i'm located in durham, north carolina, i've called many rehabbers & they have all said that they can't take him. right now i'm feeding him 4ml every 3-4hrs, and he has yet to lose his appetite. are there any antibiotics i can get ahold of without prescription?? i'm not sure that my vet would be able to provide me with baytril or clavamox.

thanks so much.

Bryan, ask friends and family for any leftover antibiotic. Often woman use Cipro for uti. You just need 1 pill and we can tell you how to dose it. Augmentin is another.

No. You will need ONE of the following, Baytril (animal ab), Cipro (Human ab.)
Clavamox (animal) Augmentin (Human)
If it hasn't expired you can even use Doxycycline.
This is urgent. They can go down really fast if not treated asap.

Edit: redwuff corrected my response (below).
It looks like you can use Zeniquin.

Would any of these rehabbers at least help you out with antibiotics?
I see that you are feeding Esbilac.
We are having problems with that, and you may want to get your
little one off of that asap.
Does your can have an American flag on it or does it say crafter like the first photo?

i’ve reached out to many friends and family members, none of them seem to have any of these. https://allbirdproducts.com/products/baytril-10 — this is a link to nonprescription baytril i found, would this be appropriate?? it would take days to ship, though.

There is a safe vet in Raleigh, North Carolina who will see squirrels without taking them away. Dr Dan Johnson 919-844-9166.

Sorry for the wrong name. My iPad auto corrected and I did not notice it.

If this is AP, you must find meds ASAP. Call Dr Johnson. If your baby has AP, he will die without antibiotics. It is very treatable, but there is not a lot of time to waste.

Yes that product would work and if you could go to a store and buy it, that would work, but you do not have time to order it.

Bryn,

Also check any aquarium/fish stores or bird stores in your area. They might carry a Baytril fish or bird version.

I have looked up zeniquin and it is in the same class as Baytril and has been used for rats. I need a weight on your baby and strength of the med. I don’t have much time cos I have an hour and a half commitment at1030

no worries about the name. i’m in class currently, but i’ll give Dr Johnson a call & set an appointment for this afternoon, he’s only about a half an hour away. if he’s unavailable for today i’ll pick up a scale and give you his weight for zeniquin dosage.

How was your baby this morning?

just incredibly tired, and the clicking noise is still happening. his appetite remains, though. he took 4ml of formula & 1ml of pedialyte no problem.

Can you describe both the tired and clicking noises more. Is clicking coming with every breath?

it’s difficult to wake him for his first feeding in the morning, and is almost never awake or active. the clicking is with every breath and is loudest when he’s about to be fed or directly afterwards, very quiet when he’s sleeping. i called Dr Johnson & they don’t have any availability until tomorrow morning, so i weighed the baby. he’s 3 ounces & the zeniquin is 25mg.
