September. nest building?

I've been watching this female since breeding --she only has one baby and it's almost weaned. lately she's been building or repairing the nest furiously every day. She's very aggressive and does not allow any other squirrels in the yard. Sge occasionally fetches the baby back into the nest if he wanders more than a few feet from home. Whats up?

Not unusual, especially if the nights have gotten any cooler at all. They move to lower branches and more fortified nests in the fall. They will reinforce / re-insulate existing nests when the temps start dipping. Mom's with babies are very territorial especially with adolescent squirrels (1 year or less) that do not know to respect the area around where they have their babies.
