Hi guys! I’m relatively new to the squirrel world. I have raised two babies in the past and had zero problems. They were released and all was well in the world. A local logger and friend brought me a new baby 2 weeks ago. I believe he is around 4-5 weeks old. He has been perfectly fine until I noticed this morning his breathing was very rapid and he was clicking. I bounced into action to find some baytril but struck out. I resorted to finding someone with an extra dose of cipro but have yet to find anyone. The meds I have on hand are not going to work from what I’ve read. I have lincomed 300, keflex, pcn with procaine 😫, and simplicef. I have called 3 local rehabbers and one was full, the other two have yet to call me back. I have little doubt he will make it through the night without some form of intervention. He’s warmed with a heating pad, ive been attempting to feed him every hour although he’s barely taking anything in-maybe 1/2cc if that per feeding. Any tips, tricks or answers to get this baby through the night until someone will accept him?!

keep trying to find Baytril or Cipro. They are the fastest acting.Let me see if any of your meds will work. Need weight of the baby or a picture to guesstimate

He was 2.4 oz this evening. He has drastically lost today. I can weigh him in grams if needed.

Let’s go with the keflex. Need strength. If anyone else thinks another drug would be better, please speak up.

You do not have pm privileges yet. Will give it here cos I think your baby is critical.

(Removed and PM'd to member)

Try and crush the particles of keflex and then add 10 ml of water. Shake vigorously. Give your baby .03ml of suspension twice a day.

I’m on it! Thank you again. I’ll update you as I can.

We can switch antibiotics if you find Baytril or Cipro. Keep looking for them. Go on the internet knock on doors, rob the vet office (just kidding). I have had babies that I am holding thinking I will hold it till it dies, and then they just”snap” back. It is that dramatic.

What formula are you feeding.? Have you been trying to find a rehabber all along? We would love to see a picture of him.

I had a can of esbilac-the older version unopened that I’m using currently. I had actually bought some of the goat milk ingredients to transition him to but didn’t try it today in his state. He’s got enough stress on him.
The I tried to find a rehabber for the first week I had him. I recently moved just across the state line from Kentucky to Indiana and the rehabber I had worked with in the past was unable to take him because he is considered out of state. They gave me some names to try but one was reptiles only and the others never returned my phone calls. I tried 3 more this morning but on was unable to accept him because they were full and the others have yet to call back. I had this problem with the last two that I had and was told just to allow nature to take its course. I couldn’t just leave them to die so we made it work in an outside aviary that I had and they were eventually released. They still come to visit nearly every morning for their treats while we drink coffee but seem to be doing great.
I’m sure hoping someone calls back by morning to give this guy a chance, until then I’ll do all that my nursing background can do for him! 311322
This was him this morning!
