My daughters boyfriend found a baby squirrel. We are giving it Pedialyte because it seems dehydrated. But it has a very strange injury on its right side. It has like a red string sticking out of it.
I’m not able to post a picture from my phone. We are located about 30 miles south east of Atlanta. Any idea what it could be? It was bleeding earlier. We cleaned the area and put triple antibiotic ointment on it.

Are you looking for advice, or a rehabber to raise it?
(I am like half the distance away, Spanky.. this sounds like Henry County or halfway to Macon, a 2+ hour drive for you)
On the strange injury.. we would really need to see a photo of it to guess.
It sounds like a pinpoint constant slow bleed that is hardening into a 'string'. A spider bite can cause this.
Probably not a bot fly.. as what they excrete does not harden.

Sadly the little one didn’t make it through the night. 😔 We were trying to give it Pedialyte every hour to rehydrate it. It was super dehydrated, like it took forever for the skin to go back down after you pinched it. When we would stimulate it to potty the urine came out dark brown. When we got up to give it more at 2am it was no longer alive.
But I’m glad I found this board for the event we find one again. My daughter usually fosters orphan kittens.
Thanks for the offers to help. I wish I could get the photo to post from my phone as I would be interested to know what it was we saw on the injury site. Can I email someone the photo to look at/post for me?
