I have 2 baby squirrels that I rescued, one male and one female, about 4-5 weeks old. The male opened his eyes today and is very energetic. The female still has her eyes closed, and does not really want to move around as much as the male. Today I noticed she has suddenly developed a very swollen front paw. The area that is swollen is around the "thumb nail" area. It is pinkish in color and does not appear to be bruised. When I touch this swollen paw, she does not protest or make any noises or movements indicating pain, but she seems to refrain from using the paw when crawling or holding the syringe nipple during feeding or sitting in my hand. I have tried to read everything I can about the cause of paw swelling, and have not been able to reach a conclusion. Can this be a sprain/fracture, or some type of infection originating from the thumb nail not growing out properly? What can I do to treat this swelling depending on what you guys think the cause is? What kind of things should I continue to watch for in order to diagnose and treat properly?
