Found a very small baby squirrel three days ago almost newborn, on the concrete by some apartments near my house and the poor baby has a whole leg full of ant bites and has some on its genitals, neck, paws and tail!! Made sure it was still alive and waited awhile to see if the mama was coming back for it, I ended up bringing it home but it was so hot that it’s skin was minorly burned on the side it was laying on the concrete on (mostly healed now)
I started putting triple antibiotic ointment on the bites today bc I was afraid I would make it sick if I put it on them I don’t know what else to do I’ve searched and searched and haven’t found anything!!!! Please HELP!

Hi, I’m not much more experienced than you are, but you definitely have to get the baby hydrated! I would leave the responding up to more knowledgeable members but I’m not sure if anyone has seen this yet. Get some unflavored pedialyte and infant ibuprofen (just for the syringe, in my case it was the only small one I could find in a hurry), and esbilac powdered puppy formula. POWDERED. You’ll need the formula soon but right now you just have to focus on getting her hydrated. Do not use pedialyte for more than 24 hours or the joints may swell, which I learned the hard way. Reminder that you will NOT be feeding the infant ibuprofen to the baby, JUST the pedialyte. Hold the baby upright as best you can and angle the syringe upwards towards them making a 45 degree angle. BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS. It is best (I have read) to let the baby lap up liquid a drop or so at a time. If they drink too much too quickly, they will aspirate and die. So be very very very light handed and careful. If the liquid comes out of their nose, immediately turn them upside down (gently) and wait until it drains from the nostrils completely - otherwise it will get into their lungs, they will get pneumonia and also die.
For the bites, I do know that betadine is safe, dilute in warm (not hot) water to the color of strong tea, and bathe baby in that twice a day. (I use a small coffee cup and a cotton ball.) That is antibacterial. I’m completely certain that within a few hours, somebody who knows better will offer other solutions, particularly with the feeding implements - there are better syringes and nipples online that will be recommended to you - but in the meantime I couldn’t just pass through and say nothing. I hope this has been of some help!

P.s. you will also need to massage the baby’s genitals to help him or her go potty, poor thing. Use a warm, wet q tip or soft damp towel to help simulate the mother’s tongue.

Oh and I am really not sure of what to do to soothe that burned skin. That poor child. Just be very gentle until someone better can help. The thing I came back to say was that you also have to keep the baby warm. Do you have a heating pad? If yes, make sure the baby has a cool spot it can get to in case it gets too warm. If no, find some bottles or jars and fill with warm water, wrap in towels and place under soft blanket wherever you have made a place for the baby. Change the water frequently so it stays warm

I have a hard time using this site because I am used to a certain mobile format like on Facebook etc so I’m not sure how or if I could tag the admins in this post BUT i just remembered that you can post in the life threatening forum and somebody may be subscribed and be alerted to see it sooner!! You are currently in the non life threatening thread, and even though ant bites and sunburn may not sound that scary, a dehydrated & hungry newborn or infant is very serious

Someone please check in the non life threatening forum for the thread from heavenwilson! I tried to help but I’m also new to caring for babies and I don’t know how to tag or message the experts in a post! I don’t want to have given her incorrect information or left anything out, her situation sounds serious, am hoping someone will be notified by this new post

You can get betadine most drug stores, dilute a solution to that of weak tea and wash/apply to the bites.
Make sure heating pad is under the container baby is in, not in with.

The most urgent matter right now is getting some nutrition into this baby. You mentioned finding it 3 days ago but didn’t mention formula. The ant bites will heal. It is urgent that you get powdered puppy Esbilac now. The organs will start shutting down without nutrition.

That baby looks like a little guy I got last year. He needs nutrition and hydration. Baby is burned and I’d hydrate between feedings for awhile. Start with diluted formula. Be VERY SURE you mix the Esbilac in HOT water—2 parts water/1 part Esbilac. Mixmixmix. Let it sit for a few minutes and mix some more. Repeat. Then let the formula sit for a couple of hours and dilute by 50% before you begin feeding. If the formula is tolerated well, increase the esbilac by 20% until he’s taking full strength Esbilac formula. During the meanwhile, give the little one Manuka honey water as hydration. The manuka honey is soothin to a compromised system and will give the baby some nutrition and immune support while awaiting food. Go drop by drop. That little body is fighting on so many fronts. He doesn’t need pneumonia. As for the sunburn. Got any sulfadine cream? With our badly sunburned baby, we used bar towels as bedding. They are soft, absorbant and you can bleach the snot out of them (they come 4 to a pack at Walmart). Burns are easily infected and the best way to prevent infection is to keep him clean. When you handle him and especially when pottying him, wash hands really well. Remember he’s burned and handling hurts. I used the bedding he was in to handle my boy and when I was through feeding or treating I’d place him in fresh bedding without actually touching him. As his skin heals it will begin to peel. A soak in warm baking soda water sooths and helps the skin slough off. After a bath, more cream. Keep that skin lubricated! Bumpbump was released this spring. He still looked pretty ratty but one moult later and he’s a sleek beautiful boy who rules the front yard.
