My squirrel will be five years next month. She gave birth once, but the baby didn’t survive. How old is too old to have a baby?

This is the only (unverified) information I could find on squirrels...
"Female squirrels have one litter their first year and usually two after that for up to 10 years."
Many animals such as cats never lose the ability to have babies but an aged animal may not be
able to carry or produce healthy babies.

She built two nests this year, which is strange for her. She does have a squirrel who she hangs out with. He or she sometimes sleeps in her spare house.

Not so unusual, squirrels do build more then one...
Maybe she built a guest house for her friend. :grin2

Or it could be an adolescent or adult child? I have seen a few cases where it looks like one of the kids just stayed around with mom, long after the other kids moved out.

She only one baby and it was killed while still hairless. She hasn’t had one since! I need to investigate more and see if she still goes into heat.
