View Full Version : Neuro squirrel?

Hello everyone,

I have come to the conclusion that one of my babies has some neurological issues. Not super severe but enough that it's holding him back. I wanted to believe that he would get more solid on his feet with more practice, but at 10 weeks I know it's more than just being wobbly.

The 2 fox squirrel babies fell out of a tall tree at about one week old. The first few weeks they didn't move all that much so I didn't notice him being different except he would fall asleep a lot which is how he got the name Dozer (looking back this seems like an obvious sign :sadness). One baby is totally fine and going to be ready for release in a few weeks. The other, who helped type this (see below :grin2), is pretty decent at jumping and climbing, and he has made great improvements with walking on flat ground in the last couple weeks. But his head shakes and his balance is off when he tries to sit up and eat. He will flop himself almost on his back to hold his snacks and eat. If he tried to do that in a tree he'd definitely fall. We built a new nest box for them and he cannot seem to figure out how to get inside, but his brother figured it out easily and is snoozing in there right now. So obviously I'm concerned that he wouldn't make it in the wild.

I've been reading some posts on here and I've seen that Prednisone can help some neuro babies. Is it too late for that now? If not, how would I get some for him? Are there any other suggestions that you can give me to help him at this point? I would very much prefer to release him but if that's not possible then we would keep him (not ideal, since it's not legal in my state so vet care would be hard to come by)

Food: They are still on fox valley formula, they get Henry's hi-protein blocks everyday (although he doesn't really go for them), and they have veggies which he loves (kale, turnip greens, collard greens, broccoli, carrots) and they have had banana and dried apple as treats.

.hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.hhhhh hhhhxxx 111 (<< Dozer typed all that lol)

Dozer is beautiful! I would definitely plan on keeping him through the summer and see if he makes any gains with the neuro issues. I don’t think pred would help at this point.

I hope we get to see a lot more of :grouphug
