Hi all-
I am rehabbing a single eastern gray we plan to release that I've had since the last week of February. He's been doing great although he's developed a runny nose with clear drainage on only the left nostril and has also been sneezing (with a pfft sound) over the last week. Because of the runny nose, he wakes up each morning with dried boogers on his left nostril. Besides these symptoms, he seems active and healthy.
As far as background-
I've had him since he was a pinkie and I'm guessing he was just a couple of days old.
He is currently still taking approximately 10-12 ml Fox Valley 20/50 every 3-4 hours during the day with an 7-8 hour break over night. I use a magic nipple with a 3ml O ring syringe. When he was tiny, I weighed him daily and he has been growing steadily, but haven't been able to get a weight on him over the last week as he is much more active and will not sit still when I've tried so the scale number jumps all over the place. His last weight a week ago was approximately 156 gm. In addition, I put a couple of henry's blocks in his container each day which he has sniffed a couple of times but has not eaten.
He is still growing well as far as I can tell. He also continues to be very active and jumps and runs around the large rubbermaid container he's housed in. The bottom of the container is lined with fleece as it has been since he first came. And while the box is now bigger, his set up is essentially the same with the exception of branches and twigs I've placed in the box that he runs and plays on. I have seen him chew on a couple of the leafy branches.
He still requires stimulation to pee and is peeing regularly and is also having plenty of normal yellow poop both by stimulation and on his own.
My concern is possible aspiration, although he exhibits no other symptoms than the runny nose and sneezing- No clicking sounds, no lethargy. I also wonder if he somehow injured his nose and that is causing the symptoms. The fact that is only running on one side makes me wonder this. Would antibiotics be beneficial? I do have some amoxicillin I could use if needed, although I'm not sure it is warranted.
Any advice one of you could give me would be much appreciated. I'm a nurse and I know aspiration can be a real threat so I want to be proactive.
Thanks so much,
Tricia
