I work at a vet clinic and I have a male fox squirrel that is about 6 weeks old. He was found in the road 10 days ago and brought to me with what looks like a old suckling injury to his penis. It was swollen and inflamed with bruising and damage on the tip. I was doing warm water soaks and applying neosporin and panolog. He’s urinating fine, eating well, gaining weight and his parts are now “normal” looking except that the opening in the sheath seems to be narrowed. We haven’t been able to find much information through VIN or other veterinary resources and I thought you guys might have some ideas. I’ve rehabbed fox squirrels before but haven’t ever come across this. At 6 weeks should the penis be easy to exteriorize? And if he’s urinating well is this something that needs to be addressed? Do we need to surgically enlarge the opening of the sheath? Thank you for any information you have.
