I have a few questions. I am not sure what the cause of his diarrhea is and everywhere I look says diarrhea can be deadly for squirrels so I'm kinda freaking out trying to find out what's wrong. I have a 4-5 week old squirrel. Just got him about 6 days ago. Not sure if this is relevant but he was constipated for a few days when I first got him, but they adjusted slowly to yellow/gold long pellets but firm and no bad smell, until today. Today I went out of town for the day, but I brought him with me so I could feed him and make sure he stayed warm. Before I left this morning I fed him and he pee'd and pooped normal long yellow firm pellets. I went on the road with him and fed him again 4 hours later, and his poop started off normal yellow pellet and then mid poop got very mushy and then runnier towards the end. It also started turning a lighter yellow color and it started smelling pretty bad. Two more feedings done today and his poop is still bright yellow kinda turning beige-like in color very mushy, runny and very smelly still. I have started him on pedialyte in between feedings now since the diarrhea. How much pedialyte should I give in between feedings?

I was thinking maybe all the craziness of traveling in a vehicle today could have caused some of this diarrhea? Is that possible? If so, I definitely won't be doing that again.

Or if maybe I'm feeding him too much? I'm kinda guesstimating the correct amount because the measurements on my syringe have been smeared off. I'm pretty annoyed about it too because I literally just bought this syringe, just for him. If I am feeding too much it would be by maybe around .5ml over, but I think I'm feeding him pretty close to what he should be getting. He's at 78 grams today and yesterday he was 75.4 grams. I have been trying to give him 5% of his body weight and I'm using full strength puppy formula.

Also I have a question about the puppy formula. Should I be feeding him full strength? Should I dilute it more? I had it diluted for the first few days and just brought him to full strength within the past 2 or 3 days. I also had a question about type of puppy formula. The only brand I could find here was "Well&Good" brand and couldn't find Esbilac. Is this brand okay to use?

Thanks for any and all help. It's greatly appreciated. I just want to do the best that I can for this little critter. He has definitely stolen my heart and I'm constantly worrying about him.

Puppy formulas are not created equal, that brand puppy formula is not ok to use and where your problem starts. You need to get the correct formula (pictured below) mixed 2-1, always the powered brand, never liquid formula. Also a syringe you can read to actually know how much you are feeding. You have likely not been over feeding if you have been feeding at 5% but over feeding on top of diarrhea will just accelerate the problem.
Diarrhea causes dehydration. Pedialyte should not be given over 24 hours, you should hydrate in between feedings with water.

As soon as I read the words " yellow" and "stinky" together with "diarrhea" I can only thing of one thing: COCCIDIA.
Most squirrels have it in their systems; when they are stressed it overtakes the immune system and presents with what you are seeing. It is usually not fatal, but is highly contagious and can really debilitate an animal.

ALBON or BAYCOX are the go-to meds to treat coccidia.

I think I was wrong about his age initially, not sure how I messed that up. I think he may be around 3 weeks? His eyes are not open yet. Here's a picture of him from yesterday sleeping in my hands during the car ride. So cute. 308050

And another picture of him the day we received him 7 days ago. 308051

I gave him a drop of kaopectate last night before bed and his pooped started firming up for his middle of the night feeding and then was a firm golden yellow pellet this morning.

I'm about to get up and go on the search for esbilac formula and new syringes today.

If it doesn't clear up I'll take him to the vet for the coccidia meds this week.

Oh okay so I was right the first time! Thank you :)

I switched to esbilac yesterday and I was really surprised by how the smell is so much different from the other formula! His diarrhea has cleared up.. hopefully it stays that way.

Hi. I'm sorry your baby is having problems. If you Google baycox toltrazuril you will find a number of different options for buying it online. This is really the only way I know of to purchase it. Albon, another drug for coccidia, also works but is not as quickly as baycox.

In the meantime, hydrate him between meals because the diarrhea dehydrates him.

What are you feeding them? Yellow, stinky diarrhea could be from the likes of kitten formula (wrong protein for squirrels) or almost all puppy formulas except Esbilac.
